Tranny problem

Well this morning a friend and myself start out to replace my passenger side axle that we though was broken but now we think it is the differential. When I put the car into grear and try to go it either sounds like a meat grinder (reverse) or it dosent do anything when you try to go. We pushed it down the driveway to see if it would pull up and when you let out the clutch its just like being in neutral. Is this the diff??? my friend stuck his finger in the tranny where the axle goes and he could move something back adn forth... im guessing thats the diff. Neither of us know much about trannys. Any help would be great.

Pull your transmission and pop it apart is probably the only way you can tell if the transmission has any internal damage and what EXACTLY is wrong.

well I have a new tranny now to put in but I was planning on learning how to do tranny work with it and fix it myself. So then it would be a spare I guess.

Replace the tranny with the other one you have so you can have a car to drive around. On your spare time, tear apart your old tranny and learn how everything goes together and comes apart. I'm sure the Helms manual has tutorials on how to rebuild transmissions.
