tranny fluid
hey guys, quick question. I've always been told to use only honda transmission fluid in my transmission. recently i swapped my busted tranny for an si tranny, and when i looked in my haynes manual it says use 10w40 oil in the tranny and 5w30 in the engine i think. but anyway, i know it says 10w40 in the haynes manual. Anyone ever heard of that? That's what i have in there right now, but i am going to drain it and put honda tranny fluid in there, but i was just wondering.

not 100% on this...but that MIGHT be the weight of the tranny fluid (10w40), however in some cars, and just some people in general, will actually put engine oil in the gearbox. Honda MTF

Re: tranny fluid (Probot)
i was just wondering why the haynes would give me a normal weight for transmission oil, cause i don't believe honda tranny oil comes in different weights. i went to the honda dealership the other day and said i needed honda transmission oil, didn't even tell them what year i had, and they just brought out two bottles.

lol yea, i dont know why they list it either. just about a year and a half ago..some jerks put ATF (hydraulic fluid, really thin oil) in my tranny instead of normal trans fluid..didnt even have to be the Honda ****..they just didnt do the right thing at all...anyways..after a couple of weeks of grinding into gear i decided to drop the tranny oil, so i brought the car to my mechanic and when we looked at the oil..he asked me wtf it was..and he did the same thing...handed me the Honda MTF and said this is the only stuff to put into Honda trannys.

Yeah I don't know, my tranny hates that stuff. Not saying not to use it (since it is OEM Honda) but what I am saying is, 10W30 does also do the trick

I run all Honda MTF and the tranny shifts great. Since you don't even need 2 quarts, it's worth the extra cost, IMO. In the Owner's Manual it says you can use xxW motor oil as a TEMPORARY replacement. I wouldn't risk running motor oil in a tranny full-time.
