Tranny on eBay
Anyone ever bought a tranny from ebay? I need one for a 98 civic. I've seen a few for less than $300. my dad doesn't trust ebay because he says they will probably break again in a few months. so I tell him that even if its a few more months at least it let's my car run while I remove my current tranny and try to fix it myself. Has anyone had any experience on ebay? I found a guy on craigslist but he's making stuff complicated.
another thing, I have been told that its the inside shaft bearing that needs replacing and might as well replace other bearings If I crack open the tranny. so how much would a job like this cost if I do it myself?
here's my thinking...even if I get a avg tranny or like $200 it will be nice project. but I don't know how much money I would be looking at parts wise..
does anyone know where I can find the helm manual? I went to their website and I found one for my car, I'm just not sure if it would cover the rebuilding of a tranny or if there's a specific book I need to buy.
thanks guys

i've heard you can rebuild the tranny with new bearings and syncros for under 150
might as well get an Exedy OEM (or whatever you want) clutch kit too while you're at it, unless your clutch is new or has a lot of life left.

A transmission for $300? That's kind of high for a manual, unless it's a VTEC B/K series.
Or do you have an auto?
Honda manual transmissions will last hundreds of thousands of miles if you take care of it properly.
I wouldn't worry about buying a manual trans from ebay, or any other used source.
Honda auto transmissions are a completely different ball game - they are absolute junk and I would NOT buy a used one.

yes its a manual tranny.
$300 too much for a manual tranny? well its $200 plus $100 shipping so its $300 total. wow, I was considering buying a remanufactured tranny for $700. do u guys recomend this? so I guess that's excesively high. my fear is buying a tranny on ebay that is garbage and being stuck with 2 bad trannys and my car not running at all.
so u guys agree that to rebuild a tranny it will only cost about $150 to $200 for bearings and syncros? that's ofcourse if I do it myself. where would you guys recommend to buy the parts from?
btw...im going to buy tha exedy oem clutch kit.

ebay is just like buying a transmission from another individual... so what i'm saying is you could buy a transmission from someone that lives close to you or even out of a junkyard and it could still mess up again in a couple of months.. I'm honestly going to say that I buy from ebay a lot and I havn't ever had any problems from ppl on there.. and around here a b and k series transmission goes for like $600 or $700, but I know ppl here that also have D series tranny's for $150, so $200 isn't bad for one, so i'd pay the extra $100 if you can't find one around you anywhere, but you could rebuild the tranny if you know how to do it.. I'm not sure where to buy the syncros and such I usually go through ppl around here that deal with different places if I need syncros and such for tranny's that I rebuild and everything..

one more stupid question...i found a 95 d16z6 si tranny. would it fit a 98 dx even though its an si? ive been reading tha d16 will fit it but that si thing throws me off. thanks again. if it does i might have found one close by.

To clear your confusion about Si's, just because it says Si doesn't mean DOHC. Civic Si's didn't have DOHC until 99.

Buy your tranny from a japanese auto parts importer. Why go through eBay? You will have no idea how many miles are on it...you will also have no idea if the gears grind or the synchros are worn. Not to mention the bearings inside the tranny...
Atleast a JDM tranny you know has fairly low mileage, and the importer will warranty the tranny as well for atleast 30-60 days (more than adequate time to discover if the tranny is bad).
