are they more for looks or do they really serve that much of a purpose?? i mean i've seen them on like JDM race cars and what not.. i'm just wondering the advantage?? sorry if this seems like a N00b questions

they actually saved my friends eclipse, he had a tow hook on the front and when his clutch line blew on the fwy he had to get towed. when the tow truck guy started hooking up the front and pulling the chains were pressing and scraping on his front bumper, then we noticed and all yelled hey stop, STOP!!! then he pulled by the tow hook and no paint chips or cracks.
