Default Top speed of a D16Z6 Transmission

Ok, so here's the deal, I've got this guy I know that says he got his civic coupe 180mph with a stock D16Z6. Now, I know this is bull, but I am kind of curious now. Two things: If you topped out a D16Z6 tranny in 5th, how fast would you be going and; which tranny of all the D series will get you going the fastest and how fast? (assuming you have the power to top it out).

first of all 180 with just about any stock honda is impossible. but to answer your question i do believe that the dx tranny has the longest gears in it i dont know how fast it will top out at but im pretty sure that has the longest gears. i know that the ex/si gears are the shortest of d series trans

I don't think there is a supposed "top speed" to a transmission, but there is a top RPM to a d16z6.
So say 9,500 rpms in 5th gear = top speed.
His claim of 180 "sounds" about 20 mph beyond capability. I'd say 160 max, more like 140.

My question for him would be: What speedometer did he use to measure it?
My speedo goes to 120, and a type-r speedo goes to what? 140?

yeah.... im thinking he is looking at km/h, or trying to fool you

look at this cluster:

http://typerfan.co.za/images/c...r.jpg

So 180 km/h is about 112 mph. Which is easy. My EX has gone that fast without trying too hard.

Thats an interesting calculator,

http://www.fatboyraceworks.com/gears/
If that is correct my EX trans should top out in 5th at 192 mph, and the DX should go to 202 mph.

Need something more than a stock engine to get there though.
I don't know... it is "possible", but you would need some kind of huge straight stretch going downhill for miles, :-)

My money is still on a km/h miscommunication.

well i know that I have wrapped my speedometer around to the M on the mph in 4th gear with an si tranny and i know my 94 coupe read 130 on the speedo.. so 180 actually would sound acurate.

This is the 'gear calc' I use: http://www.autocrossing.com/cgi-bin/gearcalc.cgi

It's pretty accurate!

For instance, when I punch in the numbers for my B16A2 Si swap/ S4C tranny / HX wheels - it comes out to 153 mph (which is very close to reality)...

Yep... in a perfect world!

I just ran a HX with stock gearing and stock tires through the gear calc (I linked to above) and it came out to a THEORETICAL 181.9 mph @ 6800 rpm.

Sooo... the gearing IS there - at least for a HX, even though there's no chance of doing it with 106 whp!

Ya, I figured all that. The guys an idiot that told me he did 180mph. I was mostly curious about how fast you could go if you were toped out in 5th with different transmissions. He says he's running a stock motor too. Hahaha. Thanks for all the info guys. I'll have more info to call his bs with.
By the way, that calculator is pretty cool.

0 rpm...the damn thing shouldn't ever hit the track if its a stock D16z6. You will want to park it in the driveway and save yourself the embarrassment.

ungh. a stock d16z6 will be good for about 130. MAYBE 135 or 140 with a decent downhill. 180 is a whole new ballgame... he'd need about 4x the power.

Yeah I know I did 150 with my single cam zc vtec, but it was struggling with that, and it's a little stronger than a z6, that guy could've came up with a better lie lol..

dont the ecu's have speed governor anyways, so 180 would be way too much unless it chipped

The automatics do. D15B7 anyway at 120MPH. I've never noticed that the 5 speeds do.
