Yeah i wanted to see some pics of top mount intercoolers on EG HB Civics if anyone had any. I was thinking about putting one on mine and wanted to see how people welded the piping.

I think he wanted to copy the Subaru, RX7, and others design. Not worth it on a civic, get a side or front.

I suppose it will reduce the length of pipes. Will shorter pipes help in the grand scheme of turbo setup? Maybe?

That's what I was thinking at first, but then I thought to myself, wouldn't that mean some ugly scooped hood up front which will make it look just insanely tacky?

Just get front mount and call it a day.

shorter pipes are better, but I don't see you getting good air flow there. I would bet it's counter productive, not to mention how ugly a giant scoop would look on a honda.

I completely agree, function &gt; form. I'm just not so sure it would be functional. Wouldn't it have to be a custom hood altogether? I don't think you have enough room for one between the valve cover and hood. IMO, too much $ to get it done considering the possibility that it may not be any better than a front mount. But hey, to each his own. If you do it, make sure you post some pics of how, and what power you're making.

Cost too much for really not much to any gain in hp but it would be differnt and thats always nice ; wouldnt be hard to fab. everything up but the hood would be where the problem would be. Be you could be one of the first that actually had a functional hood scoop on a honda

my roomate's A4 1.8T has a side mount, about the size of a single subject notebook, lol.

No i dont plant on having a tacky hood scoop i planned on using a top mounted intercooler with a cut out hood. Then using an induction meathod in the front grill so that it flows up past the turbo and under the intercooler while that is happening the intercooler would be reciving air from the top. I have seen this setup on other cars just not a Civic HB.

Look at the hood and intercooler, unfortunately i wouldent have enough room for it to be set so low in the engine bay but you get the general idea on what the setup looks like now. You cant see but the guy used aluminum sheet metal in the grill and molded it to where as he is driving it bypasses the air in blows under the intercooler.

i would think you would still have warmer air due to the aluminum air duct that's really close to the turbo manifold, but a nitrous intercooler kit could solve that . Sounds interesting though. If you do it, post some pics.

a lot of s13/14/rx-7 guys do this. they make a V shaped wedge with the radiator and IC to maximize cooling the the expense of having no real from beam/bumper/support.



most OEM turbo cars (DSM's, supra TT, gti/TT 1.8T, etc) use side mount intercoolers as not to block the radiator.

a lot of WRX and STi guys convert from TMIC to FMIC to get larger intercoolers

So to sum up:
Can it be done in a Honda civic? YES. But it is far from cost effective, efficient, and there are other better and cheaper ways. Thats why you never see civics with top mounts but FMICs are common. Because of the motors we use, the engine bay size and dimensions, its not worth it. a FMIC in our cars is great.
