took off my silcencer today, this is what i found...

Default took off my silcencer today, this is what i found...

96 civic dx hatch / 00 ls swap
tsudo n1 catback

as long as i've had the tsudo n1 system installed (since late june of this year), the silencer has been on. i decided today to remove it to see how it sounds since my friend wanted a catback system. but when removing it, i found this....







so have bee's been hiding in my exhaust? lol j/p i know usually the cat can build up a honey comb like this, but why is it in my silencer? it's only about half way through. i doubt this could've came from the cat. i'm guessing it was from the exhaust? cause no way could it flow through the bends in the exhaust piping right?

that matrerial is ceramic. its pretty light. so yes it very well could be your cat material.

i don't know. i haven't driven it yet. hahahaha. i'm sure it's cause when i drive on the freeway, i'm going 70mph at 4k. LOL and redline is around 6800 i think.

Are you guys sure? Not that I know but, That stuff seems like its what allows that piece to be a silencer. It doesn't seem like catalytic converter material would make it that far down in that shape and size???? If your not sure call the manufacture and ask if its supposed to be there.

Yes, that is 100% without a doubt catalyst material. It came from the cat, which clearly must now be replaced.

BTW, those exhausts with silencers are completely counter-productive, because the restriction caused by the tiny opening in the silencer is equal to or greater than that of the stock system. You're essentially bolting-on a part that reduces performance over stock levels.

i don't even know what kind of cat my car has. haha. so how did this get through the resenator and through 2 90 degree bends? it's not really "small" in length to get through. i'm not tryin to argue, just trying to learn something today. lol

Take a look under the car. It should be obvious whether it's a stock cat or an aftermarket unit. The resonator and the bends were still (obviously) large enough in inner diameter to allow the piece to travel through via air pressure and vibration.

it's a stock cat... but i have a b-series swap. i bought the car with the ls motor with some stock cat and stock b-pipe (no muffler, that's why i bought a new catback). i'm wondering if maybe it's off a 92-95 civic.

and yeah, the new catback exhaust is 2.5inch. that would get it enough room to possibily rattle through to the end.

oh yeah, i drove the car last night without the silencer and throttle response feels a lot better. my dyno butt shows some gains. haha.

but i think i'm getting a funny smell because of the cat, or maybe it was just some car in front of me at the time. cause the smell didn't last too long.

x3 (lol, had to follow suit) Your cat has 8x the cross-section of your silencer with that material, and probably flows better. A baffled muffler would flow better and still be quieter and less raspy.


I'd recomend an Apex'i WS2 or Thermal exhaust, both are fairly quiet till you get on the gas.

Iono what allt his talk is about replacing the cat...call Honda, it's a 600 dollar part, expletive dat.

When my probe's cat got clogged I simply took it out, stuck a long screw driver in there, broke up all the "honey comb" material, put it back on, and kept driving it...sounded a bit different, but I didn't give a expletive...plus it seemed to have more power.

Get a highflow cat for 100 bucks... don't drive with no cat...

1 - It does NOTHING for performance on an NA car... unless it's built to the hilt.
2 - It makes the exhaust MUCH louder and raspier
3 - It's terrible for the environment.

Don't take a clean running car and make it a poluter for NO reason other than being cheap.

yeah i agree. there's no reason to pollute the world anymore than it is already. lol i'll probably end up getting a high flow cat (i just got one for my gsr a month ago). but it won't be for a while. i plan on redoing the whole exhaust system anyways.

have you pulled out whatever it was that was in the silencer? it doesnt seem likely that a sheet of that material would ram itself into the tube of the silencer EDGE first leaving the middle to be last...?
