Default Tire size question for a 98 Civic

I had a car that died right after I put brand new tires on it. It used 195/70R14. My Civic uses 185/70/R14. Can the tires from the dead car be put on the Civic without any issues?

Might be a little small. But you won't encounter any problems.

If by small, you mean tall, then sure...

It will also throw your speedometer off.

I think op is more concern with getting those new tires to fit on his car. Which they will.

Pretty sure the stock tire size of 98 civic is 185/65/14. This means OP already has oversized tire on his car (185/70/14). I read somewhere that a new tire diameter should not over 3% of stock tire.

As long as you maintain the same size and composition across the axle, you're fine with a FWD car. The big thing is the changing of the rolling radius, which means, like I said, that your speedometer will be wrong.

I'm not sure but I think the engine needs little more torque for the same speed to compensate lower rpm. I think the brakes need to work little harder as well. I don't think however these could become a problem if the car is not overloaded.

True technically, but realistically insignificant. You would run into clearance issues well before you ran into braking issues from the added rotating mass of a bigger tire, and the whole "needs more torque" thing isn't really noticeable unless you're talking about stupidly heavy tires, or stupidly large wheels.

the speedo difference between 185/70 and 195/70 @60mph is 1 mph. probably not even enough to notice on our already inaccurate speedometers.

185/65R14 to 195/70R14 is very nearly 4 MPH at highway speed, though. Still, worth keeping in mind when you think you're going 65, and everyone is passing you.

Actually I think, for the same speedometer reading, the real speed is little bit higher with bigger tires.

Who cares. It's a civic, a 17 year old one at that, not a Formula 1 car. Put the tires on and go with the flow of traffic.

The OP hasn't even come back to this thread. She's probably younger than her car and doesn't care about the accuracy of her speedometer over the cost of buying new tires.

The question's been answered. Let it die.
