Timing marks will not line up!

Timing marks will not line up!
93 Del sol d15b7 engine total rebuild. New everything including timing belt. Set crank pulley on tdc mark with arrow. The cam gear has two marks that should line up with top of head. I will talk about the mark on left side of gear only. (Other mark is in line with it and should also line up with top of head) with the belt installed the mark (left only) is either slightly above ( which engine has no power) or is below the top of head ( runs good but can't adjust dizzy enough to set to timing marks with ecm plug shorted. I tried to time the other jdm engine that I removed and had the same results. I've rebuilt many engines and have never had this problem. What am I doing wrong? Help

Best you can do with the cam is put the belt on the tooth that is closest.
If you try to set the spark timing without putting the ECU test jumper in, it will be way wrong.

Re: Timing marks will not line up!
Test plug was installed when trying to set ignition timing. The pointer on inner cover lines up as does the two marks that align with top edges of head but the belt will not go on cam gear. Notches for the belt will not match up with belt without moving the cam gear left or right so they line up with nodes on belt. Once belt is on the notches on gear (the two horizontal lines toward top of gear to line up with head and one lower vertical line to line up with arrow on inner cover) no longer line up. I'm a pretty good mechanic and understand what should line up but have never been in between notches on gear and nodes on belt. I have interchanged cam gears and crank pulleys with like engine and the gear and pulleys are identical . Still baffled! Thanks

Re: Timing marks will not line up!
I would think the belt has an issue aswell. I would check that first because if mechanically your marks are set without the belt on and the piston is at TDC and you put the belt on and they don't line up I would be leaning towards the belt. Update for us when you figure it out!

Happy Sunday!
the distance between the cam gear and the crank gear can not be changed! If the teeth line up with the two gears, I think the number of teeth (length of belt) will only effect the tensioner as the belt is a straight shot between the cam and crank gear. If space between the teeth on belt is increased or decreased the gears and belt would not line. This is my theory so if my thinking is not correct please let me know. Thanks for your replys. I know someone out there should have the answer. My problem I'm sure has been fixed before. Thanks in advance!!

Re: Timing marks will not line up!
It sounds like either the belt is wrong or is it possible the wrong water pump/ pulley got installed therefore throwing the teeth count off?

Re: Timing marks will not line up!
Thank to all of you for giving your time with your replys. You kept me in the game as i was thinking the car was running ok and thought about just keeping it the way it was. Trying to get the pictures and rechecking the marks i discovered that i was not right on with the marks and in fact i was 1 tooth off as most of you said. Now the car runs great. Thanks again for pushing me to not settle for close but making it right on.
