Timing belt wirring sound - dizzy assembly seizing??
This sound went away when I replaced the timing belt about 6 months ago. It now is back and I suspect the dizzy assembly is seizing up since it's tied to the camshaft.
Has anyone replaced their dizzy assembly and the wirring sound stopped?

did you replace the timing belt tensioner when you did the belt? did you remove all accessory belts to make sure it isn't your alternator,ps pump ac compressor ect?

Yes. Where does that red dust come from?

Re: Timing belt wirring sound - dizzy assembly seizing?? (dpkelly)
Here's the update. I notice alot of oil now on the tranny obviously from where the dizzy fits into the head. I'm planning to just replace the dizzy assembly. I have replaced the O-ring two times already and it's no use. What's probably happening is the bearing is shot (worn out) and the entire dizzy shaft is moving around as it rotates allowing oil to leak out. I also get alot of loping/misfires at idle. The timing belt makes a whirring noise too and it has gotten progressively worst.

I've got even more bad news. It was overheating on my way back from an errand today and I noticed it was overheating!!!!
I looked under the hood and it seems like it's the headgasket. DAMN!
I just fixed that about 6months ago after I replaced a broken valve. Oh well, time for a new honda civic. The neighbor's selling his 6th gen civic coupe for a good price. Now I have an excuse for a newer car! This one has been through 270,000 miles. Tires are shot, shocks are gone,... The list goes on.

I have been having the same issue with my b18, I believe mine to be the alternator belt because the tone has changed since I have sprayed it with belt dressing. I'll get back to you on that. Peace.

Well, I have good news. I checked the source of the coolant leak and it's the hose that goes from the head to the heater valve. But, oil was also leaking like crazy from the dizzy assembly. I plan on replacing it soon. I'll put it back for now and get a new one in a week or so.

Yeah what's weird is you can turn it by hand no problem and not feel much resistance at all. I suppose it's different though at higher RPM's.

Re: (dpkelly)
Well, I replaced the broken hose and re-installed the existing dizzy until the new dizzy housing arrives. I also put RTV sealant around the opening on the head where the dizzy attaches to keep oil from leaking out of there. THis is only temporary, besides, I replaced that O-ring 2 times already and it still leaks. After I install the new dizzy housing, I'll keep u posted.

Re: (ek4_b16a)
THe water pump was replaced over 8-10months ago. AFter I repaired the broken valve about 6months ago with headgasket, it went away because I replaced the timing belt.
Now the noise is back. It might also be due to the fact I was low on coolant during the latest problem (broken hose) and the waterpump didn't get the proper lubrication from the coolant. Oh well, I'll wait and see.

Re: (dpkelly)
Update.
I replaced the dizzy unit and that wirring noise is still there. I suspect that the timing belt is permanently stretched and will always make that sound. The good news is the engine runs smoother and has better acceleration. I'm going to change the coolant to Honda coolant. It might lubricate the water pump better.
That's the update so far.
I'll also check the P.S. pump and alternator just to be sure, but I doubt it. I've checked these before and they didn't make this sound.

Re: (dpkelly)
Another thought came over me. My issue might be that I'm using Prestone 50/50 premixed green coolant. Read this link about it:
http://www.mr2.com/TEXT/HondaCoolant.html
The prestone has silicates which ruin the waterpump seal. I'm hoping that switching to Honda coolant will hopefully reverse this damage. A better waterpump seal will allow it to spin more freely and that wirring noise will hopefully stop.

Re: (dpkelly)
Here's another cause. My engine is so old that there's too much engine sludge buildup in the tiny oil jet between cylinders 2 and 3. There's not enough oil getting to the camshaft. And this is true since I here a clicking sound from the head after driving it awhile. I did btw clean this out when i changed the headgasket about 7months ago. It seems that the engine is doomed to fail soon. Read about it here:

Re: (Bejita)
Mine hadn't seized yet but you could move the dizzy shaft without spinning it because the bearing had worn away. The noise has come down though and it's not as bad. I still have to replace the coolant. I have also kept the revs down. I think under high revs, not enough oil is getting to the camshaft.
