Timing belt too tight?
Hey guys, i just had a shop install my cam gears and as soon as i started up the car it sounded like i had a super charger on. You know that high pitch whining sound....is the timing belt too tight? or is that how its supposed to sound?

It should have a little sound but not to the point that it sounds like a supercharger. I suggest you take it back to the shop and tell them to loosen the belt. If you don't loosen it it will damage the crank pulley, camshaft, and water pump due to unnecessary strain on those parts.

Why is it that everytime you go to a shop something bad happens to your car? You need to either start doing things yourself or go to good shops.
Personally i would pick doing things yourself.

tensioning the timing belt is super easy,
all you need is a socket wrench, with a 14mm bit(for the tensioner) and a 17mm bit (for the crank pulley, you might need an extension to reach that bolt tho).
turn ur car off,
make sure its in neutral.
the tensioner is covered by a little black cap on the timing belt cover,
just pull the cop off(its located just alittle below the engine mount on the drivers side of the engine.. where the timing belt is of course).
there will be a 14mm bolt right there.
Loosen the bolt dont try to remove it, just loosen it a few turns.
then go to the crank pulley with ur 17mm socket,
turn that just alittle bit COUNTER CLOCKWISE
now tighten down that 14mm good and tight(torque is supposed to be like 40 something ft pounds so make it tight)..
done!

i duno,
it seems wierd to me... now that i think about it..
I can't tighten the tensioner down tight enough to make the belt too tight,
I think thats the point of it...
edit:
http://www.c-speedracing.com has a nice writeup of a timingbelt complete change.
should give u some ideas.
or just ask the goof that did it for you wtf he did wrong, ahhaha
