Default timing belt headache

posting this for a friend with no comp.

z6 block, y8 head, z6 cam gear.

He found out the closest the timing will get is within a 1/2 tooth, and thats about as close as we have been able to get it.

The problem is that after we time it up and set the tensioner(moving belt 3t ccw then torquing the tensioner) and start up the car the belt started to "walk" towards the block side. I noticed he had that "thin washer" thing in front of the crank sprocket instead of the behind it, so we took it apart and put the "thin washer" behind the crank sprocket and buttoned everything back up. Started up the car and now the belt "walked" the opposite way away from the block. Eventually this thing will walk off the gears and the belt will pop off.

any ideas??

thanks

the only way that can happen is if something is not aligned properly or if the belt is not tight enough... im guessing theres a problem with the cam gear. im not sure about the measurements but im guessing theres a reason why you used the z6 instead of the y8. try swapping back to the original gear see what happens

the washer should be in front of the belt. the washer also has a thin lip to it...make sure its facing outwards. also, doesnt the crank gear have a backing to it that wont allow it to walk towards the block?

We dont have the original cam gear, he bought the engine complete like this. Ok we'll switch the washer to the front(but this made the belt walk towards the engine). Also the crank sprocket does not have a backing on it.

Is there a different way to set tension on the belt besided moving the belt 3t ccw then tighting it down? We've been messing with this for awhile and im ready to burn his car down.

The reason we messed with the t-belt was we tried to set base timing and the red mark wouldn't get anywhere close...........turned out the key for the crank damper came loose and it slipped but he didnt realize this until it was all taken apart.

the Y8 i think has the flange on the engine side of the crank cog with a single alignment "washer." i think the Z6 should have two washers if it doesn't have a flanged crank cog. since you say you have the Z6 block, you'll need two of those washers, one on either side.

the Z6 cam pulley has several marks on it i believe... you need to either grab a manual and look up the timing procedure w/pics of the timing marks, or maybe someone on here can confirm which (i don't know off the top of my head...)

you may also want to confirm that you have the right belt.. i could be wrong, but i think one is a little longer than the other.
