Default Timing belt broke while driving

I was drivingdown he street at about 45mph maybe 2k rpm and my timing belt snapped. Should I waste the time and money to take the head off and check the valves or should I throw a new timing belt on and hope for the best? I have a 93' del sol 1.5L

you better pull the head. valves are more than likely bent and you may have piston/cylinder wall damage

chances are you got some severe damage, for the price of repairs you can upgrade to a d15b vtec from hmotorsonline.com or something and be up and running again in no time.

Are you mechanically inclined?

If you can work on it yourself, you can definitely have it fixed for a LOT less than a D15B swap. That engine shipped from HMO is at least $700, plus the time to swap it, ECU change ($$$), fluids, etc.

Or....

Pull the plugs and do a compression and leakdown after installed a new timing belt. If all is well, rock on and go buy a lottery ticket.

If not, pull the head, take it to a machine shop and have them drop some new valves in it. New HG, intake gasket, etc. Done.

Mine broke last summer and only cost me about $175-$200 to get it all fixed, including the 2 valves that were bent, and basic machine work to the head.

i wouldn't risk it, chances are the valves could be damaged and starting the car with bent valves (even turning the motor over) could cause bigger problems.

i you didnt hear anything when it broke chances are your motor is ok. Try putting on a belt and see if there's anything wrong. You have nothing to lose anyways if your motor is already blown. well maybe just the cost of new timing belt

you could try putting a ratchet on the crank and slowly turning the motor over (the right way) while listening for abnormal noises. if you don't know your car well enough to hear these noises then this won't help you.

are you changing the timing belt yourself or are you paying a mechanic to do it? If you're going to spend the time changing the timing belt, you might as well pull the head and inspect the valves.

Ditto. From reading reports here and at many other Honda fora over almost a decade, it seems there is less than a 50% chance that valves bend when a Honda Civic timing belt fails. Yes it is an interference engine, but I suppose the pistons nudge the valves closed in many cases during the remaining revolutions, sparing the valves damage. The valve pockets (a.k.a. "valve reliefs") in the piston heads may help, too.

ive seen then break and nothing happen.

i would just throw the belt on it. if they are bent you will know.

it either wont start, run like crap, stall at idle, etc.

if that happens, rebuild the head and re use the new belt you had to buy anyways

I'm somewhat machanicly inclined... I have the haynes del sol book that I am reading through and I'm pretty sure I can figure out what I'm doing. Although I don't know what a leakdown test is.

I would get a new belt and see what happens, I place my bet on it being fine. I have seen several D16Z6s break the belts and no valves were bent, one broke at 80mph going down the freeway. I have also seen the Timing Belt break on 2 SOHC Honda Accords and they were both fine as well after a new T-Belt and Waterpump.

None of the above cars were mine that I speak of, one was my Brother's car, others were cars of people that were friends of some of my friends and I put the new belts on for them.

Can I do a compression test after I put on the tbelt? If they are far off would that let me know if somethings bent of a piston is gouged

Yes, doing a compression test will give you an idea of whether or not you have internal damage.

I disagree. I see no where that he said he did exactly what you did, so more than likely, his situation will not be the same as yours. If his motor has damage, his compression numbers will most likely not be in the acceptable range. Like I said, it will "give him an idea" of whether or not he has internal damage.

A friend of mine snapped his timing belt on his gsr the other day while he was driving. threw a new timing belt on it and it fired up just fine, no bent valve or anything.

Bringing this back from the dead..

Are the chances the same for the single cam to be damaged/not damaged as on a B series, particulary a B18C5? I think I may have snapped my timing belt the other day and I'm trying to figure out if that is why my car died while I was driving, because so far it isn't the dizzy and i haven't been able to get my valve cover off to inspect the belt.

Not really. But you never know.

I have seen both engines get away fine, (not a b18c5, but a b18c1) and I have seen both be damaged.

Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you get ****ed.

Cross your fingers that it wasn't the belt.

Good luck, i broke my timing belt on my previous d16 and it completely bent like 4 of my valves checking your internals would be a good idea before cranking it!

Thought I snapped my tb but no. Pulled the valve cover off and the side cover to find the belt good but down below it looks like the belt tensioner literally snapped off the block. I can't believe it. Anyone ever heard of such a thing? What am I in for?

Yes heard of it, sometimes it is recommend to change the tensioner, many cases on Honda 4 cyl, you will be ok.
