Default Timing

Just picked up a 94' si for dirt cheap, the head was done, so i have a y8 head in my garage. i put it on and im running into timing issues. Z6 block with Y8 head, and im using y8 cam gear with z6 belt and its not working

so ive search and heard you have to use
- y8 cam gear w/ y8 timing belt.
or
- z6 cam gear w/ z6 belt.
or
- either belt w/ adjustable cam gear.

So which is true, i want to use oem stuff if possible, any help would be great

you have to use the belt that goes with the head or the belt will either be too long or too short. if you find out the belt is matching up a half tooth off then you need an adjustable cam gear. i know this happens when you put a z6 head on a d15 block. either way it will start though if you have it a half tooth off, i had to run my mini swap like this for a little. if your lining it up to what looks to be right and its still not starting and you have spark, fuel, and compression. take off your distributor bolts and when some on is cranking your engine move your dizzy back and forth (might have to go further than your bolts would let you) now if your close to the right timing it should start up and run like ***. now if you had to turn your dizzy to the fire wall you need to move your cam gear towards the bumper. and vice versa. even if you hear your car wanting to start and it wouldnt before do the same thing. ef-hatchcrap i went through deland yesterday on my way to daytona how is it over there? i just moved from mass.

Beware of the thread jackers! Back to the issue. Just use the y8 belt and you will be fine.

you talking about me? i answered the question buddy. im curious as to why you guys would even throw a y8 head on a z6 tho. good amount of work for practically no gain.

Because the og z6 head was screwed and I had a y8 laying around. I have tried both z6/y8 cam gears. I ve tried advancing and retarding both cam gears 2 teeth each way and still nothing. Im most definitely not a noob with single cams its just been a long time.

Im going to try to use a y8 belt and see where that gets me. I bought he car out of the junkyard with clean title for 600 bucks and im trying to spend minimal amount of money so I can make a profit

i hear ya.i assume your using the stock crank so it should have timing marks. i've never timed a y8 head tho maybe its different. i always seem to miss a tooth when i do mine and you'd think i'd have it down since its been off about 6 times in the last few months. you test for compression and all that good ****? another way i know you can do it is keep compression testing and move the cam gear a tooth in a direction and stop when you actually get good compression. you should have a round about area of where it shoukd be. i have a after market crank pulley so i've had trouble bc it dosnt have marks. what winndixie?

oh nice ill have to ride out some night. hows crime out there? as far as the car goes... if the belt your using now fits then that can be it as long as there isnt too much slack. hopefully the rest of the motor is good... let me know how it goes maybe i can think of something that might help you out. definately try moving your dizzy while someone is cranking though it works great.
