timing
Hi All,
Newbie here... my recently purchased 99 Civic LX (D16Y7) timing is mechanically off. I think the previous owner didn't replace it correctly. Anyway, I wonder if I can do the following steps to adjust it without removing everything.
1) remove cylinder head cover and upper timing belt cover
2) remove spark plug on cylinder #1
3) place a long stick down in cylinder #1
4) turn crankshaft until the stick on cylinder #1 stop moving upward (set crankshaft to TDC)
5) loosen the timing belt adjusting bolt
6) adjust the camshaft to TDC
Also, does a cracked exhaust manifold robs the engine power? I have a 1.5 inch hair line crack along the primary O2 sensor.
Thanks.

Re: timing
What I do, is slip the timing belt off the cam gear, set both the crankshaft and camshaft to TDC, then slide the belt back on by slowly turning the camgear and pushing the belt back onto the gear.

Re: timing
you don't absolutely have to loosen it. i just slid it off and then angled it when i went to put it back on after i did my head gasket. it would be a lot easier to do the belt part if you loosened it though, i just couldn't get the rubber stopper out of the slot so i just said screw it. worked fine for me.
