what happens when u advance the timing in a motor 2 much, other than detonation?

Too much timing on what motor? N/A? Forced Induction? More timing allows for a more thorough burn for higher octane fuel.

How vague.

What is "too much." And in which direction?

Advancing timing is fine for cars with n/a setups that are less likely to knock/detonate.

There's no automatic answer. It varies per application/motor/setup/fuel

With boosted setups you usually retard timing to prevent knock/ping.

With boosted setups you usually retard timing to prevent knock/ping.</TD></TR></TABLE>2 much advanced, my problem is when my car was tuned, the tuner had to put timing in the motor, well I recently put a new T-belt on the timing went back to where it was supposed to b, so now when I hit the gas hard it sounds like valve noise, but if I retard the timing the noise goes away...I was just wondering why to much timing causes the valve sounding noise?

What are you doing going to a tuner or modifying your car when you don't know what changing the timing does?

And you don't "put on" timing, you either advance it, or retard it. Your engine ALWAYS has timing. It's not something you add.

I'm really a bit confused about what your situation is here.

The basic answer is, yes, advancing the timing too much will result in detonation.

When you say your tuner had to "put timing in the motor", what exactly do you mean? How is the car tuned, and are you referring to him advancing the base timing at the distributor or playing with the timing maps in the ECU? It sounds as if you're talking about the base timing at the distributor. If so, what setting are you using?

base timing is set with the distributor

How would you have altered the ECU's timing maps by changing the timing belt? </TD></TR></TABLE>Im kinda clueless on that myself, when my tuner tuned the car we set the cams at tdc, and we were like 8 degrees out on timing, that was with the distributer all the way advanced, so he told me he could put timing in on the basemap, and he gave me a stock(b16 basemap) chip just incase the timing went back to normal, so when I changed my t-belt a month ago, I started the car up and when I took it for a test ride, the car was detonating bad

Well either way, the only effect it would have had is on base timing (not the timing maps themselves), and that should not have changed either unless your timing belt was not installed correctly to begin with.

I put the b16 stock chip back in for a while, but yesterday I put the other chip back in and just retard the timing all the way back on the dizzy, and I have no detonation and the car runs like it did when it was first tuned
