Timing at 17 Degrees

Timing at 17 Degrees
The Problem:
I am using a digital timing light from advance. I setup my positive and and negative to the battery. I setup the reading clamp to spark plug wire on cylinder 1. Per spec, the timing at top dead center should be 12 degrees +/- 2 degrees.
I set the gun to 12 degrees and the TDC mark on the crank pulley is not aligned with the pointer on the timing cover ( TDC mark is to the right of the pointer).
So I went ahead and adjusted the distributor ALL the way clockwise, which brought the TDC mark closer to the pointer. However, still not aligned.
So I went ahead and kept adjusting the degrees on the timing gun until the TDC mark aligned with the pointer. That put me at 17 degrees.
What is going on? Would my higher idle RPM of 900 give me a different reading?
Things I have checked:
-Camshaft sprocket is label 1.6
-Aligned camshaft sprocket to left and right marks, with "UP" facing up.
-At same time crankshaft sprocket aligned to pointer on oil pump.
-Rotated a few times and is still aligned.
The Engine:
-D16Y7
-OBD1 distributor, injectors, o2 sensor, harness (OBD1), and ECU (P05).
-idle at 900 RPM

Did you jumper the pin under the front passenger side kick-panel? https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-crx-ef-civic-1988-1991-3/can-someone-send-me-picture-timing-jumper-2738123/

Re: Timing at 17 Degrees
I did not. Thank you.
Also, I don't think I changed the timing gun from 2 stroke to 4 stroke. User errors here. I also do not know if I setup the timing belt on the compression stroke or the exhaust stroke since there are 2 TDC's. I will work these out and get back to this thread.

Re: Timing at 17 Degrees
Remove spark plug #1 ( cylinder nearest front of engine/ timing belt) insert long screw driver into spark plug hole and turn cam (can use socket on power steering pump bolt) counter-clockwise until piston (and screwdriver) reaches highest point.. you are now at TDC. Recheck alignment points http://autodiyonline.com/honda-diys/...placement-diy/ Good Luck.

Re: Timing at 17 Degrees
Distributor, injectors, o2 sensor, harness, and ECU (P05) are from D15B8. The injectors on a D15B8 are 180cc which are the same for a D16Y7. Since the D16Y7 original is a OBD2 system the male end on the injectors from a D16Y7 will not fit a OBD1 harness.
