Default Tightening Parking/Emergency Brake

i was wondering if anyone had any tech on how to tighten a parking/emergency brake...last night when i pulled into my friends driveway and i had my car in first gear i turned off the car and pulled my brake like usual and it snapped...it was always loose but now i must get it fixed or fix it myself...i would rather fix it myself...so if anyone has any tech on how to do this please reply and let me know...thanks a lot.

What snapped, the cable itself?

You might just need to adjust it. There is a little nut underneath the ebrake handle cover. Its easy to adjust, take the cover off (or if you have little fingers you can get to it by taking out the ashtray). Jack the back wheels up and tighten it until you can hear the brakes rub as you spin the back wheels.

Just pull the ebrake cover and tighten the nut. It's really simple, given it's just loose. You should have it so 7-10 clicks is as tight as you can get it.

Take a look at everything, I don't think it is very likely the cable broke. Check where it attaches to the rear brakes. Not sure how it is hooked up on drums, but with caliper brakes there is a retaining clip; that may have come off.

yup, you could count the clicks, this is what I do instead of jacking the car up.

Is this for your 5G? Here's how the Helms manual says to do it:

well i know that for sure it is loose because when jacking my car up my driver side rear tire could move more than the passenger side rear tire...i will use the helms guide that you attached to the thread to help me out...thank you very much everyone.

Andrew

P.S. This is how Honda-Tech should work!

one time i pulled up my parking brake, and the handle came up so high that it cracked the plastic trim around it. turns out the bolt holding down the front of th handle had worked its way out.

Try tightening that nut you see behind your ashtray with a 12mm open ended wrench. If that doesn't help or you don't see the adjustment nut then get a service manual.

I think my Helms says how to replace the cable. I can post up the pics of those pages if you want ... just as I did for the tightening of the adjustment nut. If you don't want to do it, any good shop or Honda dealership can do it for you. A dealership definitely will; they do anything.

This is the only thing I could find about replacing parking brake components in a 5G Civic, straight from the Helms service manual. It was pretty much the same in my 6G Civic Helms, too.
