ticking sound when cold...rod knock? valves?
92 civic hatch, D15 motor, 170K miles
well, originally I thought it was the valves. Im sure they have never been adjusted. The ticking has been getting progressively worse over the past year and only happens on cold starts and occurs until the motor warms up.
adjusted the valves, most of them were surprisingly TOO TIGHT and only 2 or 3 were a bit loose. adjusted to spec, same "problem" occurs.
car seems to run fine. its auto so the trans is starting to slip a bit (never been serviced lol) but otherwise seems ok. there was some oil in the plug holes but I think thats just the plug gasket leaking. no smoke, no other strange sounds or problems. occassional antifreeze smell but no drips to be found, probably just seeping somewhere on the radiator. what could it be besides the valves? Im not sure what rod knock actually sounds like.

Re: ticking sound when cold...rod knock? valves? (Cute EK)
definitely not the injectors. its loud enough that I can hear it while driving on a gravel road, until it warms up and goes away. Ill see if I can get a sound clip of it.

is your engine built?
My guess is piston slap or valve adjustment.
Since u say u adjusted the valves i would guess piston slap.
Piston slap is more common in built engines but can happen in stock motors too. Could be a sign your sleeves/rings are starting to wear.
How many miles on the engine?
Piston slap is normal though- dont worry. Just worry if it keeps slappin after ur warmed up

pinging could be detonation. what gas r u running? what engine?

stock motor, no modifications at all. again only seems to occur after startup and once it warms it goes away. but over the past year or so its seems that its getting a bit louder and lasting a bit longer. i never really noticed it before after initial startup, but now its definitely noticable. also seems to be louder the harder I accelerate. if its really cold out, and I go up a hill and have to press the gas a bit harder, its really loud.
