Default Those with Rota wheels, inspect them

There was a recent autocross near Houston TX in which this happened:

http://home.att.net/~blairphoto/scca.html

And here is a thread on the Miata forums discussing the occurence:

http://www.miataforum.com/ubb/ultima...c;f=3;t=006321

Now this doesn't mean you should automatically hate Rota wheels and think their quality sucks. This just one freak occurence, but you should still probably inspect your wheels. That thread above discusses ways to inspect the wheels. I am posting this in other forums that might have many users running Rota wheels.

like I said, don't hate on Rota just because of this. I think somewhere in that linked thread somebody said that at one point 7000 sets of Slipstreams had been sold, and only twice had something like that happened. Keep in mind that WRX is fairly heavy and running R-compound tires which puts ALOT of force on the hubs during hard auto-x cornering maneuvers.

yea i was just gonna say a wrx is alot heavier then a civic or integra so i dont think any of us have anything to worry about..plus the battle or attack or whatever wheel that is is a thin 5 spoke he might not of had that problem if it was a slipstream or somthing with beefy spokes

quote for the miata forum:
Upon inspection, the Chief said that the flange near the lugs appeared to have been rusted 3/4 of the way through, and that the powdercoating (once scraped back with a fingernail) covered up the issue
I suggest you read all that was posted from those who where there before we pass snap judgments on rota's quality.

I have heard of many instances of rota wheels surviving some pretty bad crashes.
This seems like a freak occurrence that could be prevented in the future with a thorough inspection of the wheels.

just another reason to not buy them. I would have Rota pay for the damages, and then get another set. Who cares if they break, cause they're cheap, but I would be pissed if other damages ocurred

Wow, that's probably the first time I have seen that happen...but before anyone makes judgements on Rotas, read that entire forum they have some pretty good explinations as to why the wheel may have broken on that Subaru. And also, thats real cool how Rota replaced all 4 wheels and took care of all of his charges for dealing with his wheels and tires. Just a little warning to guys out there with Rotas...maybe you should go outside and give yours a check

That is the first time I've seen that with ANY wheel. Maybe someone could contact Rota with the pics and see what they have to say about that. I have some Rota C8's that will be going on my Eg Hybrid, but I won't be auto-x'ing either

Before everyone freaks out, there's not a wheel company out there that hasn't had a failure at one time or another. There's not that many wheel manufacturers in the world (I don't care how many names you throw out there, many of them have the same parent companies). Rota's parent company (can't remember the name) makes wheels for a few different companies. Ever noticed how a few companies have exact "knockoffs" of Rotas? Look at slips, group-n, circuit 8, subzeros. While you shouldn't expect this to happen to your car, you should still take precautions REGARDLESS of what wheels you run. If you auto-x or do track events, you put extra stress on your wheels. You should routinely check your wheels for cracks or problems (even if you only use them on the street). I've seen billet wheels snap into a few pieces, I've seen forged wheels fail, and (as we all have now) I've seen cast wheels fail.

u get what u pay for.
With all of the rims sold. many many copies. This has to be in a very low percentile. I am not worried that my rims are going to do the same thing at all. I would at least check them for any signs like stated. But face it this must be under 1% more like a .0005 % failure rate.

If you guys read the forums, the actual wheel failure was due to oxidation of the wheel 2/3-3/4 of the way through the wheel. Only then could the forces on the hub cause the spokes to shear off. The chief of that particular autocross inspected other Rota Attacks and saw some sign of oxidation on those wheels as well. Maybe Rota is using a new casting process that allows the wheels to oxidize, even after painting. Just inspect your wheels and contact Rota if you see any signs of pitting or bubbling due to oxidation.

yes, that is so true. I know a few guys that are heavy into alot of roadcoarses and auto-x guys more than anyone on this board. They always talk about every wheel will fail one point in time. I've seen and been told SSR wheels crack, even Volks, yes, Volks wheel have had of bad shares within in time. I wish these guys were on this board, they can back me up on this.

Also, I seen the same thing happan on OEM Honda wheels. Two of the spokes on the HX wheels crack and wanted to separated. The guy was running Falken Azenis but had alot of track time on the wheels, damn it, , I wish I still had those pics.

oh dear. that is scary. i know during aut-x obviously you would corner alot harder than normal but what would have been the outcome if that happened on a entrance ramp to the freeway or something. yikes. im sure there are other wheels besides rota that this has happened to.... just inspect ur wheels!

Taken from the Miata forum:

"BTW, here is a post from a Suby guy who had failures:

"Talked to Cecile [Rota representative] on the phone today and she was so nice and apologized for the problems. She informed me that they would replace ALL FOUR wheels [one broke, one had cracks] with whatever model I wanted. SO I could have gotten Attacks, or battles, or tarmacs, or whatever. [edited out stuff not relavent] To top it all off, Cecile tould me to fax her the info on the track day and autocross I missed, and she'd reimburse me for my losses! And also to send a fax of the receipt for swapping the tires, and they'd pay for that too!"

They also paid to have his original wheels shipped back for engineering inspection"

That is what I called a great company to stand behind there products. Most likly its a bad batch, kinda like the cams that Skunks made a few years back.

This is very TRUE! Weight + stress = havoc

I love my ROTA's and I don't plan in auto Xing so that's that.

ROTA is a good company and if you look at their website, they produce most of the OEM wheels you see in cars on the roads today.
