Default TEST DRIVE: 2000 CIVIC SI BOGGING?, EXPLAINATION IF YOU KNOW

So today, I went to test drive a 2000 Honda Civic SI. It has 68k mi, an intake, a skunk2 exhaust, and a AEM fuel rail. The check engine light was on cuz of some evap line or some other vaccum line supposedly. So i started driving and everything was fine. I then reached a stop sign and the rpm drops to below 500. I gave the car gas a couple times but nothing happens. Car just sits there and I think it was bogging. I turned off the car and started it again. It then ran fine with rpms idling normal and no problem back to the dudes house. The guy had no idea what happened either. We were both surprised. Does anyone have a clue of what happened there?, I need to know because I might buy this car. Thanks

it was most likely because of the evap line or vacuum line that was throwing the CEL. just common sense might wanna fix that?

so the evap or vaccum line you think caused the CEL and the car bogging?

ya i i'm pretty sure that if the CEL came up as an evap or vacuum line that is what would cause the bogging, our shop teacher always used to pull vacuums on shop cars and have us diagnose it and we'd always think further then a vacuum line, and it always pissed me off, but the car would do like u said bog and the idle would drop.

Would the bogging continue on when driving or only happens when the car is at idle because when i drove the car, it was fine after i turned it off and started it again.

definately sounds like it's b/c of the vaccum leak or teh evap problem - vaccum leaks can cause weird power fluxes usually resulting in engines not running right (either too high or too low idling among other things)

does thats cause the engine damage? I checked out the engine too but what was weird was the throttle body. I reved the engine from there and it stayed reving for like 2-4 seconds at the same rpm after i let the throttle body go. there was like no spring action on the throttle body that kicks it back to idle. The tab where the throttle cable hooks to just goes back slowly to idle. Is this normal???

i have a similar problem where the car bogs alot and i have to turn the key on and off while driving every once and a while. tipically at stops. mine is because of either the throttle position censor, or the other was i believe the idle control censor. one of my friends that knows a bit more about hondas than I said i probably just need to clean it.

Sounds like a vacuum line problem to me.

Why don't you check the CEL before you buy the car...see what codes it's throwing.

This one is hard for me to let go for the price and mileage. Most other EM1 Si's i see are from dealers far from me and they are over priced and have above 80,000 mi, mostly over $10,000!. I figure if i buy this car, i can easily fix the problem and have a nice car w/ low mileage and for a great price and the car is located near my area. But i dunno if im gonna buy a car with a bad history or not

Sounds like he is holding out for more money, I would pass, for that price it better be tip top engine wise.

Bump
I need more opinions and help on the bogging explaination cuz i'll know 2 marrow if i'm gonna buy it or not. the guy had it for 9000 obo but the reason y the guy is selling it for 8000obo was cuz the trunk has no carpet, passenger side door was replaced with another SI door (no tint on it like the rest of the car), the driver side window has trouble goin up, and there are a few dings and scratches (tiny dents and barely visible scratches that can be buffed). Also, I think the guy has money (lives in a rich neigbor hood) So i don't think hes trying to get more money out of the deal.
Besides the problems listed above which can be easily fixed, i think the problem with the engine is the throttle body or the evap. How would you go about fixing an evap any way???
