my temp gauge goes up when i idle after driving for awhile and goes down when i start drivin. i popped the hood and the fans work but there is some coolant towards the passenger side of the res. it runs down the res. and down along a hose. and the res. is above the max fill point but not enough to overflow and what no. i thought it might be the thermostat or a small leak or hole i am hoping. thanks for any help. i searched and think its the t-stat but i will drive the car, jack it up and try to see where if is coming from in the morning

Take the cap off and burp the system. Make sure there is enough coolant also. Mine just did the same damn thing to me today. Effin thing overheated almost, but the needle was bouncing up and down.

If the temp falls, heat is being transferred out of the engine, and coolant condenses, resulting in less pressure outward, your thermostat maybe hanging slightly open, mine did this before it hung completely open, and that was a cold bitch that morning ill tell you what....

good news and bad news

the bad. the car still goes up at idle but not as bad and now something new happened it goes up slightly on acceleration but it goes back down when i hit a steady speed or get off the gas. i basically drained then refilled the rad. and burped it.

the good
it does go past 3/4 towards hot and the temp goes down faster.

i think i didnt put enough coolant in so i will put more in and burp it again then try again. if it fails then i will look into a t-stat

It almost sounds normal to me. When you accelerate the water pump is turning faster so water is flowing through faster lowering the temp. I would personally get a new thermostat. They are cheap and really easy to replace. There is a good chance it will solve your problem.

i am gettin worried cuz someone told me to this:

take the radiator cap off while the car is running and rev it up while watching the water level in the radiator. if it rises and starts to come out of the radiator, then you got yourself a blown headgasket.

just from the knowledge ive gained, that doesnt sound reasonable... because isnt the coolant supposed to come out? it is supposed to be under pressure, thats why there's a pressure cap

burped it today and say no bubbles when i reved it saw no bubbles and didnt all come out and what not. just steamed some like ppl said be4. i think i am good. i will see on my drive to work and back. thanks again for all your help. its greatly appreciated

My old '93 coupe used to do that, right before the headgasket let go. Better get it checked out before it pops on you in the middle of nowhere like mine did!

gonna do a compression test in the morning most likely if i can get up early enough be4 work. but no oil in the coolant though, thats a good sign thus far.

I've had that motor sitting in my garage, untouched, for over a year now. Motors are hard to get rid of.

i got another motor in my garage too. but yeah about 30% of the fins are bent on the rad. found some small pebbles in the rad. in the front to check it out so yeah. but i didnt see any oil in the coolant. can i still have a bad HG w/o seein oil in the coolant? i will do a compression test and see whats up

sorry for the delay, been mad busy. did the compression test and have to do a leakdown test now. compression test has some bad news. all cylinders except one was happy. all 3 were like 180 but one was 160-165. so yeah. i am blown right now and wondering what the issue can be and going to do a leakdown and pray it wont be a $$$$ fix
