Default temp sensor?

I'm not sure what is wrong with my car, but I'm guessing its the temperature sensor.
It acts weird, I'll start her up, and as soon as it gets to operating temperature the temperature gauge goes up to the red, and it doesnt go up slowly, it just shoots up. I'll put up a video in a bit.

Hope someone here can help me out.

is it safe to drive the car if its just the temperature sensor thats messed up?
and btw, its a gsr in a 99 civic hatch.

Sounds like the engine is overheating or the one-wire temperature sending unit located under the distributor is bad.

i dont think the engine is overheating because as soon as the needle goes to the H, i took out the oil dipstick and had my friend touch it.
he said it wasnt hot, and he didnt make any "ouch" noises, LOL!

how would i go about on replacing that? and where would i be able to find a replacement?

That's definitely the temp sensor shitting out. If the car was overheating it wouldn't climb back down and stay level, then just for no reason shoot back up, drop slightly down, climb back up, etc. Also, if it was that hot the coolant would be bubbling in the overflow and most likely the engine would start running like **** if it was buried in the red. Test out the temp sensor near the thermostat and see if it's reading correctly.

Just to clarify for the OP. The temperature sending unit (1-wire) is situated next to the temperature sensor (2-wire) under the distributor. The coolant temperature switch for the radiator fan, on the other hand, is located in the thermostat housing. The sending unit provides the signal for the temperature gauge in the dash.

This sounds like a problem with the coolant temperature switch located in the thermostat housing. Disconnect the switch connector and insert a jumper wire into the connector of the wire harness. The radiator fan should now run continuously with the key turned ON. If so, replace the switch.
