Icon5 Temp gauge on the cold side? is it harmful?

Hello everybody, recently purchased a '93 Del Sol Si and I have a question about the temperature gauge reading.

Just took it on a 400 mile round trip to break it in and get used to it. During the trip, I started to notice the temp gauge being on the cold side. I hadn't looked at it too much before, but it seemed passably normal. maybe about 1/3 of the gauge. But on this trip, I looked at it every once in a while, and by the end of the trip it was maybe a little above 1/8 of the gauge.

My question is, is this harmful for my engine? I've gathered that it is probably my thermostat staying open too long and passing too much coolant. Could this do any damage? is it a sign that it might fail soon and overheat the car?

Thanks for any help!

Over-cooling can cause clearances to be out of spec, thereby causing increased wear. Additionally, the ecu can enter warm up mode which will result in excess fuel consumption.

The ECU and temperature gauge both read from different sensors. If you replace the thermostat and bleed the cooling system, and still have this problem, consider replacing the gauge sensor.

Replace the thermostat & bleed the cooling system first.

get the lisle funnel if you experience air pocket hesitation syndrome.
