Default TDC crank off 97

Good evening all,

I have a quick question regarding timing. My camshaft is at TDC (mark up), but my crankshaft mark was not pointing on the mark on the block. So I took off the belt and turned the crankshaft counter clockwise until the mark lined up. I then put the belt back on and everything is lined up. Is this the proper way of doing this if your timing is off?

Thanks

depends on how far the crank was off . your best bet woulda been to loosen the cam cap so it set all the valves in thier seats then turned the crank so it couldnt smack any valves. then tightened the cam cap back up

You need to make sure the crank pulley is lined up first before setting the camshaft. Don't work backwards.

The cam was already lined up TDC. The crank was not (off 1inch or 2), so I turned the crank almost a full turn back to the TDC mark on the block.

My concern is that i did not do this correctly so when I go home tonight I do not bend any valves.

Thanks

^^^ That's my point. Line up the crank pulley to TDC FIRST....and then remove the timing belt off the cam gear(s) and set it to TDC.

Ok sounds good but I have put the covers back on. Will I have issues if the cam was set to TDC then I moved the crank to TDC?

Thanks for your help.

The car started up the first time which was awesome. As long as your marks are lined up you are good to go but like others have said its best to align the crank first.

The timing belt was a bit to tight so I had to remove the covers, and reduce stress from the tensioner. Before I put the covers back on I just put the crank on, valve cover on, spark plugs/wires, and started her up. This way I could make quick adjustments without taking the covers off.

Well you did the last part correct. Next time turn the crank a couple times after installing the belt then re-check timing. Then you dont have to do that last step of hearing it run.
