OK i'm just curious about this technique.

I'm going change my buddies timing belt for him.

he's got a 00dx

what I usually do on my car(92eg) is put it in 5th, lock the brakes,
then pop the bolt off with a breaker.

So what i'm wondering, is do you guys think this technique is safe?
I'm wondering if it puts stress on the tranny or anything like that?
Seeing as it's not my car i'm working on I don't want to eff anything up.

That's the same way I did it on my 99 hatch. Worked pretty good. Plus you can do it with one person. Much safer IMO than wedging a screwdriver in the flywheel.

yeah before I tried this method, I ruined a couple tools trying to wedge them in there.

there is a pulley holder tool you can buy for 50 bucks. i think that's the best way.

I have used a tool similar to this one. The only drawback is that you have to have a lot of room to hold the breaker bars...unless the car is on a lift.

that method should work fine unless its an east coast car....

otherwise u can borrow the one i got (maybe not this weekend)

1st gear would be a better gear to put it in since 5th would spin the easiest but n e ways i always use the screw driver idea in flywheel and always using air tools and break bars
