Tachometer installation

I just installed a tach on my 96 civic dx. When i set it to 4 cyl it reads at like 6,000 rpm idle. What did i do wrong?

Does it move when you hit the gas? If not, then you hooked up the green tach wire to the wrong wire on your car. Is the tach brand new?

Yes, when i give it gass it does move up even more. The tach is brand new

which tach is it? autometer? how did you "set it" to 4 cyl? it sounds like you have a wiring issue..........
