i just got a sunpro tach from my friend for free, and i was going to install it but the needle is at 1400rpm and its not in my car. is it broken or is that just where they sit?

I have an autometer tach and it sits around there too with no power, try hooking it up to 12v and it should drop down to 0rpm's if you want to check it, You could also hook it up temporarily under the hood without running all the wiries to the dash if you really want to check it out b4 hand. Good luck

Im sure that the tach is just sitting there once you give it 12 volts it should drop back to zero.
