tach "floats" at 6500+rpm.....
i noticed this on the way home from englishtown- my tach will rev up normally to like 6-6500rpm, at which point it kinda just floats around above 6 grand. the engine continues to rev normally and drives fine. it also only does this when im moving in gear, not when revving in neutral. i know the tach runs from the coil, and the coil has less than 1000 miles on it. i did some searching, and some people briefly brought up the vss....does that sound like my problem???

Check your grounds.
Use a voltmeter to see what your alternator is charging your battery at. Should be around 13.3 to 14.0
It will let you know if your alternator is over or undercharging, which if your distributor is sensitive to voltage changes then your tach may get upset when you rev up that high.

I too have this problem with my stock tach. It started a while ago when I replaced my ignition coil. I have searched and read many posts about this saying that the ignitor is going bad. I have a spare ignitor, I think I might go install it right now to see if it is really the problem.

I am speaking from a previous experience that I had in my hatch. Under full throttle the car would drive fine, but the tach would fluctuate back and forth. While troubleshooting the problem, in my helms manual. It recommended that I check my ignighter. I preformed the test with a multimeter. The test showed that the ignighter was indeed bad. I replaced the part. That fixed the problem. It might me the same problem he’s having it might not. Just a suggestion

You should have just said that to begin with. Otherwise people tend to just brush off your suggestions.

Sometimes it just happens, especially with electrical parts.
I had the ignition coil replaced on my '93 Civic and it went bad again in less than a month. Replaced it again and never had another problem with it.
Have the ignitor tested.
