Synchro Fubar'd?

Default Synchro Fubar'd?

Hello, H-T!

I'll keep it short: I was out being a dumbass and did a burnout all the way into 3rd gear and now I messed something up but not sure exactly what.

1. I can no longer clutchless shift into 3rd or 4th without a really bad grind.
2. 3rd (not clutchtless) will grind lightly if I shift fast + high RPM. Shifting slower at a modest RPM is still smooth and quiet.

I tried to research but didn't get clear answers.

Setup:

B16A + S4C non-LSD tranny. Both bone stock.

clutchless shifting is stupid. causes excessive wear of synchros. that plus you beating the hell out of your 20+year old transmission killed it.

Isn't clutchless shifting something that was implemented with the purpose of using it? Or is it not meant to be used all the time?

Its my understanding that clutchless shifting came about from truckers not wanting to spend **** loads on a clutch for their 18 wheeler semi truck.

So many of them learned the correct rpm to speed match the main shaft with the secondary shaft to "clutchlessly" shift.

Really old cars required double clutching. Newer cars expect single clutch action.

Not using the clutch tends to put additional wear on your transmission internals. This tends to be more expensive and more difficult to repair than doing a clutch job.

You decide what fits your wallet better, rebuilding the transmission or replacing the clutch periodically.

OP instead of not clutching I think the correct thing to do is to use the clutch twice during each shift

a term I've coined as double clutching

Until recently, big truck transmissions had no synchros. The driver had to match rpm on every shift. Clutchless shifting is still not recommended because when a gear is missed badly, it is prone to bend or break parts.

To clarify, I rarely ever clutchless shift, it was just a test after my 3rd would grind at high RPM.

I fully understand now that it's not a good habit to be in but besides that, would my synchro cause this 3rd gear grind only at high RPM?

I've heard of this before - nice to see somebody actually coined a proper name to the action!
There are stories that people that do not do this double clutching correctly and cause catastrophic damage to their engine.
Instead they make the mistake of granny shifting and it fries the piston rings and almost blows the welds off the intake.
