Re: Swapping out dashboard-wtd with vin plate?
you don't need to swap the vin plate bc you have a vin number on your door jam so when you sell it or take it to the tag agnecy just show them the door jam and if they ask questions just tell them you swapped the dash,

I'd recommend calling your local law enforcement (or state) agency before doing this. In Missouri, it is illegal to do anything with a VIN plate. You have to contact the state patrol and have them do it (change VIN). Even though everyone knows the VIN is attached to the dash, many officers will get pretty edgy if the see two VIN's on one car.
Check before you do anything.

The VIN plate is only held onto the dash by 2 little rivets. Once the dash is out it's the plate is easy to remove/install. Go get a $9 rivet gun and a couple of rivets and you can put the correct vin on the dash yourself.

the rivits will always look slightly different. If the cop gets picky or in a bad mood, you're screwed.

In Florida: you must take the car to an auto theft detective. They will inspect the car. The state will issua a sticker that goes inside the windshield instructing to read the correct VIN at the door jam where the state sticker will also be placed. They also want the incorrect VIN plate at the time you do the stickersvatvthe DMV

+1, that is what they looked at when I got mine inspected. I would still replace the one on the dash though for sure; the more places you have it the better.

I don't have any stickers in my door jams, just on the firewall and dash. Also plan on replacing the dash. Just going to leave whatever VIN is on there

i just drilled the rivets out on mine and then re-riveted it on my black dash... looks like it was made that way. and it still matches my firewall and door

Re: Swapping out dashboard-wtd with vin plate?
I had a crappy truck and the dash was cracked, so I swapped the VIN plates over to a better condition dash from the junkyard.
What I did was I took the dash out, drilled just enough of the back side of the rivet out to be able to press it out with a punch. Then I did the same on the new dash. Last I use a set of pliers to press the original VIN plate into the new dash. You could use some epoxy or something if you wanted to make sure the plate stayed put.

Re: Swapping out dashboard-wtd with vin plate?
if the dash vin matches the door vin and the vin under the hood, dont worry about it, especially on an older Honda, there is nothing wrong with changing the dash, and putting the correct vin that BELONGS to the car back on the new dash. if a cop asks why they look different just explain you changed the dash, it's completely legal to do that as long as everything matches and is correct, I happened to see this post and since I was about to do the same thing, I thought I would post, most Honda Vin rivets are 3/32 stainless, which is a kind of an oddball size, aluminum hardware store rivets dont look right, the cops are more interested in cars with incorrect vin numbers, not the guy who has the factory vin plate on a replaced dash.
