Default Swapping a 96 EX head onto a 98 DX block

Hey,
I searched!
I was wondering if I could swap a 96 ex head onto a 98 dx block. Same years, but the ex obviously has vtec. What else would I need to get the extra 20 hp or whatever that I would gain from the vtec? And would swapping just the head give me that hp or is it in the block? I really don't know anything about engines, any help is really appreciated.
Thanks

First it's my duty to correct you on "vtech"...it's spelled vtec...we're not talking about the phone.

Secondly, yes you can swap the head onto that block....do a search for mini-me and you'll find plenty of info. Searching is good and since your a noob we'll excuse you this once for not searching something that has been done millions of times.

Go to http://www.d-series.org also....lots of willing help on there and alot of info specific to what your looking to do. Those guys are more friendly with noob's which is what you need right now.

Now go search and go hit up that website I told you about. Tell them you want to do a mini-me swap...in your case a D16Y8 head on a D16Y7 bottom end.

Well, for something basic like what he is doing they have numerous extensive write-ups on that site about it. When the time comes to go to the next level, it's obvious which site should be frequented most.

it also depends on what all came with the head when you bought it.

where does the assumption "vtech" come from? Haven't they ever seen the huge picture threads spanned across h-t?

BauleyCivic has an excellent write up on the mini-me conversion. I think it was already linked though.
