which swap? gsr or type r
I was wandering what kinda of swap would be better. I'm looking at a gsr or type r. I plan on going all motor, but i want to fully build the motor. I plan on getting better sleeves, storker it, pistons, rods, cams, port and polish head and all the other parts. Would it just be better to buy the gsr and upgrade that motor or buy the type r and build that up. thanks, danny

It really just depends to what extent you plan on modifying your motor. The Type R makes more power because of some things such as a slightly higher compression and better flowing parts (correct me if I'm wrong) i.e. intake manifold, tb, etc... If you plan on completely redoing those things it really doesn't matter. However, if you are looking to make minimal internal changes I would go ahead and do the b18c5.

exactly............ if u plan on re-building the whole motor then go with GSR as u will be changing everything anyways....... but if ur planning FI or minor to moderate mods go type-r

thanks, i was thinking that, but wasn't sure. It's just that most of the people i see or know that go all motor have the type r. Since i was going to change everything, i was wandering if there was any real reason for me to get the type r. Also, can i buy the type r transmission and put that on the b18c1? thanks

u sure can ..... the only problem with that is finding a motor without a tranny, but if u can find one

I heard that the type r tranny has a better 1st gear and a better final drive than the gsr tranny. Or would it just be better to have the final drive product installed on the gsr tranny?

Just spend 1500 on a ls swap, and 1500 on a turbo kit, you will yield more power and have more fun with money to spare.

You need to ask yourself if you REALLY have to money for a full build, and when exactly are you going to do it.
A lot of people dream of a full build, but if you don't have the funds for a full build I'd say get the Type R swap.
I've had both a GS-R and Type R swap in the same hatchback and the Type R swap ran .8 quicker than the GS-R and the Type R laid down +25whp over the GS-R. .8 is a HUGE difference in the 1/4 mile.
If you are 100% positive that you will be doing a full build, then of course get the GS-R and resleeve it, bore it, etc. I'd not ruin a perfectly good B18C5 on a resleeve job unless one of the cylinders was demolished already.
Be realistic with your goals though. If you're pretty sure it'll be a while before you build I say get the Type R swap. you can always buy a fucked up B18C1 engine and rebuild that one and sell off the good Type R engine once the built B is done to recoup some money. This way you'll already have the superior Type R tranny too.
About the trannies:
The USDM and pre 1998 JDM R trannies have the same 4.400 FD that the GS-R has.
Both the GS-R and ITR trannies have the same first gear, but the other gears are taller on the GS-R tranny.
JDM ITR trannies from 98-spec and newer have the shorter 4.78 FD, but they also have GS-R spec taller 4th and 5th gears that make 5th gear cruising identical to the 4.400 equipped Type R trannies.
Also noteworthy is that B16A trannies like the S4C, Y21, and S21 also have nearly identical gearing to the ITR 4.400 trannies, but they lack LSD except for JDM B16A trannies which had an *option* for LSD.

Re: which swap? gsr or type r (B18C5-EH2)
Also stroking isn't the best for longevity. The best thing to do is resleeve the block with bigger sized sleeves (most popular thing right now is going to 84-84.5 mm sleeves from RS Machines or Golden Eagle). That works out to being roughly 2.0l.
Much better then stroking and cheaper too.
Besides does anyone even make a stroker for the C1 and C5 motors.
