Default swap decision...

i know this has been asked like three thousand times but...here i go anyway. 00 cx hatch...b18b OR b16? i have the money for either...but can't decide. i feel there will be problems with the b18 swap so i am leaning towards the b16. but the i read the 'torqueless wonder' posts and go back towards the b18...WTF?!?!

well, turbo or jrsc. well, drag or street racing. well, daily driver or better performance. those are the real questions.

Yeah, 'torqueless wonder' is about right. I put a B16 in my 93 CX, and now I regret not saving more for a B18C. I've been racing against a guy with an LS and I still can't beat him. My car is more prepped too. If you can't do a B18C, the B18B might be a nice alternative. Can't say I know though, so have a bump on me.

definitely daily driver...and it needs to be a reliable one at that. if not i would just turbo my y7(fun!). a swap seems more reliable...once the bugs are worked out anyway. i feel like if i go with the b16 there will be less bugs??? who knows...someone want to front me a motor to try out or what?!?!?

what makes you think a B16 will have less bugs than a B18c?

B18b if you're going to boost it and drag race. B16 would be cool if you're not into drag racing as much as maybe, autcorssing.

i have a 99cx and am going through problems making a decision also. i was set on a gsr motor until i searched and found the cost of it to be close to 4k (gsr with lsd tranny from hmotors plus other parts needed to complete the swap.) i was then set on getting a b16 to save about a thousand, but after searching here, it seems the b16 leads to regret not to mention that i'd rather not spend close to 3k to most likely run low 15s. But what im lookin to pay for is basically my own enjoyment of my car. After considering buying a different car and not bothering with it, im going for the b18c swap. i like my car too much. I did consider turbo for my y7, but that apparently is only cheaper than a swap at first. Installation and tuning of a turbo seems more complicated, and can be a huge money pit. yea....it depends on what your goals are and how much money you want to spend. either way, after a swap we wont be "fast".....thats where more money spending comes in

I'm in the same boat.. well, looking at either a B16A2 or a B18C1 for my 98 DX..

Since I'll most likely be going with a JDM motor, and since I'm in CA.. I'll have to spend close to another $600-800 to get a BAR sticker.. so I'm most likely ending up with the B16. It won't be too bad.. I was gonna be hoping for 200WHP after modications and tuning with either motor.. thats my goal.. until my wallet says otherwise.

I would go with the B18. I have a gsr engine and I would have to say that it is the best thing that I have put in my car yet. I was glad that I didn't go with a B16 or anything else.

i'd take a b18b over a b16, much more usable powerband.

I'm on the same boat, however I'm a little different.

I wouldn't dare dream to get the B18b (not saying it isn't good, but I love vtec).

My choices are B16a2 vs. b18c1 (97+)

Its 3k vs. 4k.

Personally for my car, I don't need to go fast, I just want a daily driver that can be fast If I need it. I never drag race or auto-x and don't plan to. So after 2 years of being set on B18c1, I've come to realize the B16a2 is right for ME. (Meaning it really depends on what you want out of your car, and other things going on in your life right now.)

Either choice is because it is a

This is what you should do,H motors sells the complete sir 2 swap for 2350,the ls for 2200 and the b18c for 3199.$1000 more and you could get the best of both worlds,if you can hold out a little longer and get the gsr motor, you wont regret it one bit.I had a b16 swap and later went to a gsr and im so glad i did,the gsr kicks ***.

couldn't have said it better myself...i just want my car to go when i hit the gas...i don't need to run 11's or anything. and as for vtec...i've been without it for this long...but i DO yearn for those four little letters

up for some more opinions

Older h22's are the same price as a b18b, that might be something u wanna look into. the swap is alittle harder, but i heard the h22's are great

Sounds like you should go with a b16 swap. Itll be quite a bit cheaper and its still quick! And ive beaten quite a few gsr swapped eg's with my b16 eg at the track

I like how everyone says "torqueless wonder" as if any of Honda's engines had any torque to speak of

I'm gonna put my vote down for a B16a. Torque will not be a problem if you are planning on turboing.

There is no replacement for displacement.
Your torque is only as fat as your engine.
Horsepower is only how fast you can rev your torque.

just go for the b16, YOU may actually be happy or at least content with it for a long time. i think the chance is worth saving the cash, especially if you just want something quicker and funner. going from our y7's to a b-series motor is a huge difference. there was a thread where B18C5-EH2 put in his thoughts on the 3 vtec b series motors. it helped me make a decision, but i forget which thread it was.
