Default Is it suppose to shift like this?

I haven't ever driven an Automatic civic before so I thought I'd get your guy's opinion. I went to test drive a 94 4dr Ex the other day. The car is the d16z6 with about 185k on it. I noticed that when taking off the car wouldn't shift out of first until like 3k rpm. Even if i eased into the gas it wouldn't shift until 3k. After that it seemed to shift fine, I just wasn't sure if this was normal or not. The car doesn't have any CEL's or anything either.

A few ATF drain and refill cycles and synchronizing/adjusting the throttle cable and lever may solve the problem.

I figured it might just be old fluid but wasn't sure. I don't guess I've ever synchronized/adjusted a throttle cable on a civic before. Is it fairly easy to do?
