Support Beam needed?
Hey guys, i'm currently working on my 98 Civic Coupe and am directing it to be a track/sunday driver. I have completely stripped the interior and have come to the support beam that runs across the car connecting the bottom of the B-pillars. It is a three piece brace.
Is this brace a structural importance? Or is it for side impacts? Any help would be nice, this brace/beam weighs a ton and would help me out to lose it. Thanks

If you are talking about the structure of the car then you are just asking for trouble. Why in the hell would you ever want to remove a major part of the uni body and make the car unsafe for any type of driving let alone racing on the track. No sanctioned racing body would allow you to remove it

if you would actually read the post i'm telling you... I DON'T exactly know what it is or the purpose. I've seen pictures of other SCCA tracking civics without the support so in your post... I think you're wrong. Just about every car i've come across has it removed. So take your attitude and shove it up your ***... I'm simply asking a question

this car competes in the honda cup...
I realize that this car has a cage as do i.. but mine is not welded in.

Well your just full of Internet muscle aren't you you ask a question with little or no info I ask a simple ? as to why you would run the risk of poss damage to your car by removing it based on what you posted. I never said I was right I could very well be wrong. I see a lot of post here now with photos and understand what you are talking about now so shove your bad attitude where the sun don't shine

You'll probably get better results from the guys in the AutoX/RR forum. They know all the rules and what parts to loose and what to keep on a car.

as stated in the main post it's all about weight. The on part i removed was well over 8lbs and after seeing many cars without them i wondered if it was a structural part or merely an impact piece.

no mean to thread jack, but why isnt the takata harness in the pics above mounted to the rear bar on the cage? is there some reason to mount on the floor? I thought that creates bad angles which can injure you worse in a crash.

If you have a good cage you dont need it. If you dont please keep them so you dont hurt yourself
96-98 did not have these, i think they were added in 99

Re: (.:Baker:.)
There are some models that did not have them. I don’t remember... Maybe it was only the ex's then that have them.
I am not failure with the auto power cages, but removing the support beam will weaken the stability of the chassis. If your cage enforces or increases stability you might be ok.
Those pieces only way about 25lbs or so… I don’t think you’re going to gain much by removing them.
