stupid question how does an auto transmission actually work
ok so i know this is a dumb question but im completely familar with the manual trannys where the flywheel bolts to the crank and a clutch is held in placve over the flywheel by the pressure plate which is controled by the clutch pedal.....what im wondering is is it basically the same setup only that the pressure plate is controled by the computer? i guess im wondering if there is still the same internal setup with a flywheel clutch pressure plate only its all controled by a computer? like i stated its a dumb question....but i rather know for sure

I dont know exactly too well, but from what i know, there are friction plates which is kind of like a lot of clutchs, and basically there is some kind of flywheel type thing but it responds to you stepping on the gas and expanding which engages everything.
BUt to tell you the truth that is just what i heard, haven't had a chance to really look into it.
Bump for me want to know too

its called a torque converter, and it works like one fan blowing another fan.

yes, you'd see a flex plate and a torque converter. there is no pressure plate or flywheel, or throwout bearing, etc.

don't even tip one over either, they hold tons and tons of ATF in them, always unbolt them from the flexplate instead of pulling the tranny out of them, makes a huge damn mess! learned that the hard way
