Re: stupid question
Japanese made civic sedans and hatches are identicall to Canadian and US made sedans.
The coupes were solely made in the USA
The coupes were solely made in the USA
Sedans were a mix. Most seem to be Canadian made
No hatches were made in the usa
No hatches were made in the usa

Re: stupid question
thats actually really good to know because i want to replace the shifter linkage and the radiator support also needs to be replaced but the problem is that the ones that are made for the japanese made civic lx are discontinued

Re: stupid question
Because without that clarity I'm inquiring about, I know darn well a JDM civic is not identical to a CDM civic which can also differ from a USDM civic, regardless of where it was put together.

Re: stupid question
Well yes if you had a real JDM car at the very least it would be right side driver, which means a lot of the parts are different.
I think the OP was talking about a regular USDM and those they don't ask where the car was made since all the parts are the same. Who was telling the OP that there is a difference?

I believe you are saying the USDM car is the same regardless of where it's manufactured?

Correct, usdm is usdm regardless of country of origin .
Typically on Toyota's the country of origin does matter, the japanese made Camry's typically came with more convenience options and in some cases different motor mounts. However with Honda all us production vehicles were built the exact same way at every plant
On the vin number the first number or letter will tell you country of origin.
1hg = us made. 1 indicates assembled and sale in market
2hg = Canadian. 2 indicates secondary North American assembly and sale, tariff free import
Jhm = indicates Japan honda manufactured (subject to tariff fees if conditions not met)
On typically 1 is us made, and J is Japanese manufactured
By law only a certain percentage of vehicles can be imported without heavy tariff for a foreign made vehicle (outside of the NAFTA trade agreement). Something like 10% of total vehicles offered for sale. It also explains why the united States never received a large number of "JDM " cars like the skyline. Overseas assembly and production is taxed heavily
Example my 1997 civic LX manufactured in Japan

Re: stupid question
Yes it's a usdm civic pc that was made in Japan but when I go to the dealership to get parts some of them are discontinued because mine was manufactured in Japan and not Canada where the ones made there they can still get the parts and the parts numbers are different from the Japanese made ones and Canadian ones

Re: stupid question
No one was telling OP. I was clarifying for others outside of thread currently who may come to this thread. Based on my experience with this site, if it's not stated outright, someone will come along and confuse place of manufacture as the Domestic Market. So they might assume that if the car was made in Japan it automatically makes it a JDM car. I wanted to be sure that this confusion could not reasonably occur.
Some good info to be aware of.
Your best bet in a situation like this would be to look up the part numbers on hondapartsnow.com or majestic honda online auto parts based on your year, make model and trim.
Then take that to the dealership.
Instead of looking up parts by VIN. That removes the assembly portion from the equation.

Re: stupid question
Yeah I checked both then went to the dealership apparently the shifter linkage for the usdm civic lx that was made in Japan the parts I wanted to replace have been discontinued

Re: stupid question
Sounds to me like you gave the dealership your VIN instead of just year, make, model and trim.

Re: stupid question
No I did give them my year make and model and sub model and then when they look up the part they ask if it's a Japanese made one and it is and then that's about the time they tell me that my part is discontinued

Re: stupid question
Just say no it's the Canadian made one.

Re: stupid question
Yeah but even if I tell them that it's the Canadian made one the part numbers are different which is what worries me

look at number 12 the one that's still available is for the Canadian made one and the discontinued one is the Japanese made one the 2 have different part numbers that's what I'm worried about

Re: stupid question
Normally when you see two part numbers for the same item and one is discontinued, the one not discontinued replaces the discontinued one.....
I see your concern:
This doesn't say anything about replaces/replacement and is a "fit" note....
I would suggest going to a pick a part for the rod and pull it from any manual 96-98 EX sedan. Pay the 25 bucks or so, and take it home and see if it matches up.
I suspect it will but..... I can definitely understand the concern.

Re: stupid question
Because I just had to replace the power steering rack and had to take the shifter linkage down to get the old rack out and the linkage was sloppy as hell

Re: stupid question
Yup that's exactly where it was soppy the cars almost 20 years old and has 195k miles on it so now I'm in replace old parts mode I just did the trailing arm bushings power steering rack and lower motor mounts and when I do the vtec head swap I'll be replacing the other motor mounts as well

Re: stupid question
There are two different part numbers, but if eghatch9295 is correct, buy the 92-95 shift linkage. It's ~$50 new from Honda.
eH.

Re: stupid question
Just to be pedantic, there were some differences, albeit minor, for Japan-made vs. North American-made Civics for the US market. The most notable one is the fuel tank / fuel pump / fuel level sender parts in early 6th-gen Sedans (you'll have to look it up for exact years / parts). Essentially Honda used a different fuel tank when building these vehicles in Japan, requiring the different fuel pump and level sender. (Actually the pump might even be the same.... sender no though)
