Hey guys,

I have a '98 Civic EX coupe that has a stripped oil drain plug bolt. My two mechanic buddies are giving me opposite opinions. One says to drill and tap it and the other says to use a helicoil. Which is the better way to go. I need to get this fixed as quickly as possible. Thanks for the help

P.S. Any sort of guide on how to install a helicoil would come in handy as well

just get a new oil pan its gona have to come of anyway to get the metal shavings out

I mean you could try to tap it with a bigger bolt, But yeah i would suggest just getting a new pan.

You said in your post that you have a stripped oil pan bolt, is it the bolt or the hole of the oil pan that is stripped?

Yeah, when I first read the thread I thought of the thread in the oil pan being stripped. Either way, the pan will have to come out in order to either get the metal shavings out from drilling out the bolt or to replace the whole pan in the even that the thread is stripped. As far as how to get it out, try both suggestions and see what works.

a helicoil kit that size will cost you more than picking up a used pan from the junkyard, FYI.

if your really broke, napa sells a thread cutting pan plug that will fit your civic. i had to do it as a temporary fix (thats all im reccomending, buy a new pan when you can) the plug is $4

or if you are really broke get an oil pan from like a wrecking yard, they go for less than 15...
