sometimes when im in my car and im rolling at around 5mph in neutral, i put it into 2nd instead of 1st and when the clutch catches in, i hear like a rattling sound. This usually happens when i am at really low rpms, like starting up in 2nd at 2krpms or goin into 4th at 20mph or something. It sounds like its coming from the rear of the car, possibly the exhaust isnt bolted tightly? I dont know why starting at low Rpms would cause this. And also could it be the chassis creaking? any advice or help? thanks

what type of rattle...metalic rattle, bolt in a tin can rattle...

its like a metallic rattle, like a loose piece of metal is vibrating or something.

we used to get that...we switched to a high flow cat...changed the exhaust gaskets....problem solved

Cats don't usually rattle unless the honeycomb baffles have collapsed and broken inside the converter.. you can tell if you bang on the cat and hear stuff rattling around in there..

If you car still has a stock exhaust system, I wouldn't follow thru with the exhaust "doughnuts/flanges" making the noise simply because you don't have any..

It is most likely a heatshield vibrating on the exhaust pipes (manifold,cat,b-pipe,muffler)

If it is contained within the exhaust system, it should easily be duplicated by simply hitting the exhaust with an object as a rubber mallet or small peice of wood.. standard hammer doesn't work too well with this test unless you use the handle part of the hammer instead the head..

My own car makes these same noises, but thats due to an aftermarket clutch.. thats another story..

when the car is in neutral and you blip the throttle, does it make the same noise? If so, its probably an exhaust heat shield.
If not, then it might be something in the tranny-you just have roll youre windows down and listen for it.

If your trying to shift into fourth at 20-you could just be bogging the motor.

Yeah, im pretty sure its the heatshield from the exhaust. The reason i sometimes go to 4th at low speeds is because i need to get moving fast in traffic and i cant put the shifter into 2nd, it gets like stuck and it just slips into 4th.
