strange chattering grinding noise around 3100-3300 RPM
When I am in park or driving and there is little pressure on the drivetrain (but sometimes with some pressure) I get a chattering metal on metal type vibration. It is quite loud and started just reciently from what I can tell, when my muffler was finally repaired right. The noise appears to be around the Catalytic converter to the engine. I do not know what side though, it is too hard to tell. but somewhere around that general area. Some guys I was talking to thought that it might be some kind of bearing problem, but I am not sure, being that it is only at a small RPM range.
Has this or something like it happened before? If so what could it be? Or... what particular areas should I check? (I did not see any parts hitting metal, but I can only see so much)

Re: strange chattering grinding noise around 3100-3300 RPM (Ricey McRicerton)
I do not think so, it is a powerful vibration and chatter, and I tried putting a shoe on the petal to keep it in the right range. Then I used a broom and pushed up on various parts on the cat and the shield, but the sound didnt change at all. So I am concluding at this point it is in fact on the engine, or a part I cannot access on the exhaust as of now.
wow ricey, been a while since I saw you, been posting a lot while im away eh? seems someone got to your Del sol writeup hehe, except with the dimention changes.
Ive got one I could post on installing (wiring/amp/taking everything from the front of the car to the rear out) hehehe

thats not a good sign (to me at least)... same thing kinda happened to me... at first i heard this light knocking sound around 3000 rpms... at first it sounded like it was coming from below the engine but then just checking on it more the sound was coming from deep in the engine... then just from driving it around it got worse and worse... and to my ignorance... it was a rod bearing... and now i need a new engine
if i were you i wouldnt drive on it much... check it out 'immediately'...
(not trying to scare you, just had a similar problem and thats what happened to me)
good luck

hrm ok, that totally sucks ... cause it sounds exactly the same, but the friggin engine only has 71,000 on it, and its a 2000, BAHHH I dont have money for this, hondas are supposed to be bulletproof lol, my luck never ceases to amaze me...

Same **** just happen to me with my d16y7. I recommend checking your oil because you could of spun a rod bearing and that would be no good. i hope its just the cat shield because if it is the bearing your looking at at least a grand worth of work depending if you know how to fix it or not.
My rods still make the clattering noise and its always at a low rpm, i say try to baby the engine until u can get it looked at. good luck

Re: (Not Fast Im Furious)
ah man this royally sucks, always did oil change at 3000-3500 miles, its an auto, took care of the tranny, all filters.... I did everything right, yet it goes wrong... wtf makes a rob bearing go bad in 4 years and 71000 miles?

i always change my oil 3000 miles... and my engine had 91k miles on it... in a 98 civic... d16y8 motor...
there was still a lot of oil in my engine when my rod bearing ate it...
calling around dealers and shops i pretty much got estimates around $1500 to $1700 just to 'look' at the problem... cause its a lot of work for them to tear down the engine...
if its really a rod bearing, either fix it yourself (which i cant do)... or get a replacement motor (im still looking for one for me)
good luck again
