storing a short block
i have a short block that has been sitting for a while and I wanted to throw some oil on the cylinder walls and turn it over a few times so no surface rust starts. what oil should I use?

Use something that "clings" to the cylinder walls. Fogging oil used to winterize marine engines works pretty well. If you can't find that, chain lube for motorcycles is some pretty sticky stuff, too...

Re: storing a short block
i used some of that spray on white grease to store it for about three years in the garage and when i got ready to put it in my car i cleaned it up real good and oiled up the cylinders with so regular 5w30 and turned it a few time more just to make sure that i got any left over grease out and then oil the walls again. motor runs great and it daily driven about 65 miles a day, and then beat on at the track every friday night test and tune last summer.
