stolen civic being held by the police
My 96 civic was stolen last thursday. i woke up and it was gone, so i reported it to the police at 10ish. it was found at 4, and is now sitting in a tow yard. when i went to go release it to the insurance company, they told me it had a police hold on it. i had been trying to get ahold of the cops for the last couple days, and finally talked to the detective this morning. he told me that he has it on hold because my engine is from japan (b16), and that it isnt smog legal, and that other parts on my car, such as i/h/e arnt smog legal either. he took my number and said he would call me back, but im wondering what should i do/say about my engine? has this happen to anyone else? i live in san diego. thanks

say you just put that engine and the I/H/E in there the day before it got stolen, and say you were going to have it ref'd the day it got stolen. i dont know if that will work, just a thought.

it's fucked that they're holding it... but you can do what jl said, or claim someone shoved that motor in there after it got stolen.. I'd go for what jl said.
sucks dude, good luck with getting your car back.

Say thats not the way it was when i had it....damn those thieves for putting a b16 in my car .
On a serious note, thats a tuff situation man. You could say that the swap and **** was just done recently and that its your recreational vehicle, if you have another car. Hope that everything turns out alright for you though.
Oh and send those thieves my way .

lol, that wouldn't be the smartest plan either haha.
the second they hear that they're gonna assume the engine is stolen and shipped from overseas thieves to the ring that took his car here. that engine would be yanked in a split second at his expense and he'd get jail time for receiving stolen property lol

having an engine swap and non-carb'd i/h/e is only an infraction... there is no reason why your car should be held, unless the cops are getting evidence off of it...

They're probably just checking if it's stolen and wanting to give you **** for not having it's emissions passed. I don't see any REAL way of getting away with this experience, and not getting ****/a ticket (whatever happens to you cali people). They won't believe any excuse you say and you will need some evidence if you do expect them to believe anything. I would assume they will just take pictures of the engine bay and send you to a ref to get smogged and checked. The pictures are to make sure you don't change anything.

This happens all the time, they often put a hold on stolen recovered vehicles. Was it recovered in another county or city than what you reported it stolen in? If so that may be the reason, the "authorities" that recovered it have to "clear" it with the ones you reported it stolen.
