Default Stock Tach Accurate?

I have a 92 VX (which comes with a stock 8Krpm tach)...and the gsr motor is going in pretty soon. I'd really like to keep the tach...since it'd be more of a sleeper..but how would it work? Would the needle go past 8Krpm because of the higher gsr redline? Would it be accurate up to 8K?

My other choices are:

1. Install an autometer monster tach. I have one sitting here and collecting dust. A friend gave it to me...so might as well put it to good use. I like that it has a shift light...but hate the fact that it's so huge.

2. Find an si cluster. Looks stock but the problem is that all the sellers i've found are asking too much for it. Would anyone happen to know someone selling a cluster?

Well...lemme know what ur opinions are. Thanks guys.

Swap a 99-00 Si guage cluster.

And no, stock tach's are not accurate......most type R tach's read 9100 at fuel cut off (8400).

you should definitely upgrade your cluster to an appropriate tach. Si clusters from the 5th gen civics would fit but their redline is still too low since it was always meant for a D16z6. You should either get a JDM cluster (higher redline) or there is a guy on this board that does a really nice job of converting GS-R clusters to fit 5th gen civics. The 99-00 Si cluster would not fit without major mods. One last thing you could do is get a Apex vtec controller (you probably would want one anyways for tuning) and that gives more precise RPM readings then tachs do.

How in the hell is he going to put a 99-00 Si guage cluster in a 92 VX? I would just use the stock one, or buy a 92-95 EX/Si cluster. I hate those huge monster tachs.. they look too ricey. The stock ones may not be as accurate at the monster tach, but they won't be far off. And after a while you learn where the needle is when the rev limiter kicks in anyway, so you'll know when to shift.

I agree with HENRY just buy a V-AFC it is more accurate and you can tune with it. that = $ better spent

If you are wondering about accuracy, then it doesn't matter. No stock tach or speedo is right on the money to begin with. There is always +/_ across the entire range. So I really don't expect the aftermarkets to be any better.

Change it because you like the look, don't do it because you are worrying about accuracy, unless it's defective.

stock tachs suck.. i have a 95 civic ex and broke the stock tach when i was messing w/ wires behind my dash.. i installed a monster tach that was more accurate but it is no where accurate as my vafc.. since i have installed the vafc and will be swapping in a b18c1 very soon i installed a 94+ integra gsr cluster.. all it requires doing is rewiring the cluster wiring and making it fit in and look good w/ a dremal tool.. it only took me about 3 hours to rewire and make it fit and work correctly.. and btw, the integra cluster is also off from the vafc

most stock tachs such as SI/SiRs are about 100-300rpm off at RPM below 5000rpm.....above that it goes up to 200-500rpm

mines is off only by 200-300rpm at 8500rpm

as far as speedo most are off by 5-10mph

Hey thanks for the replies guys. About the VAFC....wouldn't it be hard to read though? It's a digital reading of the rpm correct? I would imagine that the digits would be quite small.

just go to the moniter setting in the V-AFC on 1 channel and it will be a farely large display. Tust me it will be large enough and very accurate.
