Stock EK, what to do??
I've got a 98 stock EK coupe powered by a D16Y8. It has almost 250k on it , and i don't know much about the history of the car, aside from the fact that it was purchased from a Mazda dealership and apparently has never been in an accident (it runs really well though). I've had it for about 3 months now, and i've been planning on beefing it up a little, although i want it to remain a daily driver.
I plan on getting a swap (b18c1 or c5) and turboing in the future, however i would think some work should be done beforehand. This is my first car, so i'm pretty new to the game. I don't really know where to start, so any advice would be great!!
ps. i searched around for answers but had trouble finding anything that fits my situation, so any links to other threads that would help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Stock EK, what to do?? (RotaryPWR)
i am in the same boat as you i just bought a 99 EK with a D16Y8 with 105k on it and i am going to put a subtle exhaust on it along with a short shifter. When i have the money i want to replace some internals but all in good time. If i were you i would just focus on any suspension, body or interior modification that you want to do until you get your new engine.
Good luck and welcome!

Ya, I saw that, that's why i decided on a b-series
So basically i shouldn't mod any of the internals, but just do some body work until i save up enough cash for the swap? I'm thinking of keeping it looking clean, so i was just planning on getting some black motegi rims along with some Si taillights..it's black and the windows are tinted. I don't know much about suspension..any ideas? Also, do people normally go for some performance brakes? I'm sure i should upgrade from the stock kits.

dont put money into your y8 if your going to swap the motor. thats just a waste of money. either build your y8 or save money for the swap!!! my 2cents

well suspension for a daily driver should be lowering springs with good shocks to provide you with the least amount of discomfort. nothing beats stock suspension comfort though

None of us can tell you what you want to do.
Figure these things out:
- What you want your car to serve as a purpose. (daily driver, track/drag, auto-x, etc.)
- Budget/Financial Status
- What's available to you
Then go from there...

i would start with
viper alarm/gps tracker
shocks/springs [full coil-over kit is nicer]
sway bars
brembo blanks
hawk pads or =
SS brake lines
maybe some bushings
replace the jelly filled mount
then
$ave $ave $ave

With that many miles on it I wouldn't spend on any bolt-ons on your y8 unless you rebuild first.
and if I were going to build the y8 I would go turbo. The single cams and the LS motors react well to boost and are hella cheap if you blow them.
If your going to get the swap, save your money and leave the y8 alone.
If your itching for performance then spend it on suspension.
Go with a full coilover kit or peice together parts.
My daily driver EK suspension consists of;
koni yellows
eibach proKit
skunk2 pro series front camber kit (not necessary)
omnipower rear LCA (not necessary)
GSR swaybar with siR (canadian) endlinks

I agree with all but the alarm and the brake lines. Then again, my area isn't known for Civic theft, so it may be a good investment for you.

Re: (Archidictus)
I say alarm first, shifter bushings/short shifter (for comfort), then suspension. I would only replace parts as they break or fail. Do a tune-up on your car and just drive it till it dies!!! In the meantime, you can be saving for the swap and get ALL the parts needed. Don't forget you will probably want to tune-up the new swap also (fluids, water pump/timing belt. Is the c5 really necessary if you are going to turbo it? Wouldn't it be cheaper to build a ls/gsr/b16/sohc on the side and piece together a turbo kit than spending the 5 grand on a type-r??? Just my thoughts....

Re: (rc0787)
Ya, i think i'll look into suspension and brakes. An alarm system would be good too, although Civic theft here isn't as bad as some areas. I am a student, so saving up might take a while, but it'll be worth the wait. I want to do things right anyways.
I don't want the ls because i want to stick to VTEC, i also want to go DOHC, and i want to be a little more original than a B16 powered Civic. I'm still deciding between the B18s, but i thought the extra 25hp, torque, and LSD transmission in the C5 would be nice. But if the C1 is much cheaper, than i might want to go that way. Can i expect to get over 300whp after turboing, bolt ons, and going turbo, but at the same time keeping the car as a reliable daily driver?
