STOCK CX....2nd Gear TAKES ME TO 70MPH????
WTF, i own a stcok CX, and i just decided to beat on it a bit more to see if these motors have ANY POWER. Well for one thing 2nd gear takes me to 70MPH? I never heard of this, and owning/driving alot of cars i never heard of such a thing....
Is this normal? Stock ghey tranny right? Let me know...

Re: STOCK CX....2nd Gear TAKES ME TO 70MPH???? (Hatch It)
The cx/dx trannies are (I think) the longest of all of the Honda SOHC-family motors.
So, yeah. Its normal. See if a Z6 tranny would work w/your motor (Z6 trannies are suposed to be the best sohc trannies b/c of the short(er) gear ratio's).

The Cx engine was in no way intended for performance, very tall gears combined with a 8 valve fuel efficient engine makes for good gas mileage, but that's about it. My Cx is the same way, along with every other stock Cx... Peaking out at 70MPH in 2nd is right on the money.

Yup, the CX/VX tranny's suck. I just swapped mine out. It was wierd the 1st couple of days b/c 5th was useful, and 3rd actually had some power lol.

The z6 and y8 trannies are the same but the y8 has stronger shift forks. y8 tranny >z6 tranny

Re: (jerbear!)
Yea, I was able to downshift into 2nd doing 65 on the highway, and I still had gear left w/ the CX tranny, that was the only way to get real power to accelerate if I had to pass which sucked. I didn't realize that the DX tranny's had such long gears as well.
I hadn't been able to reach the VTEC crossover in 3rd until last week when I swapped in an EX/Si tranny, I still haven't gone that fast yet; but I can now lol. My D15b VTEC is much happier w/ the new gearing, but I still feel like the gearing is too long. I need to build a custom setup, but finding the parts is going to take forever.

Re: (DJ_SaNdOz)
my y7 maxes out power at like 6300 or 6600 rpms i cant remember, but there is no benefit to revvin to 70 in 2nd gear you are just losing power the higher you go

On a stock motor, that is most likely the case, my D15B VTEC seems to keep going though.

Don't forget that the y8s also have the aluminum fork that goes to the release bearing... darnit forget name.... That fork can/will break with stronger clutches or over time. The 92-95s use a steel one... doesn't break

Funny... i just took a broken AL one out of a 96 ex tranny and put in an older steel piece.

Re: STOCK CX....2nd Gear TAKES ME TO 70MPH???? (splitime)
Yeah... my CX's 1st starts pinging rev limiter at 36 in first and have never taken the motor past 60 in 2nd (sounds like it will detonate to the moon and back). But it's not as if having the longer gears is all that bad since the CX makes peak torque at 2000 rpm. I think my CX had more highway passing potential in 4th and 5th than my buddies old DX coupe. TORQUE BABY!!! J/K.... that motor really sucks. I'll miss the pure driveability of it once I trade it for a GSR though.

the Z6 uses an aluminum shift fork.
the Y8 uses a steel shift fork.
