Default Sticky gas pedal?

I have a 1998 Civic LX Automatic. The gas pedal is difficult to depress...sometimes I'll be sitting at a light and when it's time to go I'll put my foot down on the pedal and I won't be able to push it down. So, I'll push harder and harder with my foot until I can push the gas pedal down...But at this point I'll have pressed it so far down that I end up flooring it so the car shoots off and all of that. What should I do to fix this problem? Suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

It's not the floormat. How do you check the cable? Check it as in lubricate it or see if it is damaged? How could I tell if it is damaged if so?

i work for a honda dealership and we have seen those cables get messed up replace the cable and pay close attention to the routing of the cable upon reinstallation

My gas pedal used to feel like that but it just went away. Maybe there is something sticky on the linkage.

What he said, but first spray some carb cleaner or brake cleaner on a rag and wipe the inside of your throttle body where the butterfly touches the walls when closed. If that doesn't work, remove the cable (noting routing) and spray some white lithium grease in either end, and work it in and out a bunch of times to get the grease all the way down inside the housing. If that still don't work, replace the cable.

Is the cable very difficult to remove and/or replace? Never tried it before.

No. But I'm going to guess you don't have too much shop time under your belt, so to play it safe, go buy a manual for the car. Helms manual preferrably, but a Haynes will do. Follow the directions.
