Steering Wheel Shakes violently from 70+ mph -Searched-
When i am driving 70 mph and on up my steering wheel starts to violently shake [like maybe 10 knocks per second]. the wheel shakes as though there is metal clanking against each other [sounds like a "dack dack dack"]. From my searching i know everyone first assumes that its cuased by the tires, but since i've experienced this issues i've actually gone through two sets of tires(which i get balanced each time) and i always get an alignment after. During my last alignment visit, the mechanic did point out that the "bellow" boots on the driver side and passenger side needed to be replaced because they were torn off the tie rods.
might this be affecting anything? I've disabled the power steering for nearly four years now, but
the power steering rack still sits in my car. does anyone know whats really causing my issue...
Edit: So alot of people have been telling me that it can be my "rack end bushing" but i was previously thinking that i had a manual (non-power-steering) rack but i just noticed that power
steering racks dont have the rack end bushing
i looked online and i noticed that the power steering rack does also have another sort of a bushing at the end area of the rack end bushing ["BUSHING B, STEERING RACK" (Part# 53632-SF1-951)] would this bushing serve the same function as the rack end bushing on a manual racks?

Check your struts, Main issue with this, You should see cupping or a wave like pattern on your tires from this issue. It's probably a blown strut due to the car being lowered. Put some struts on it designed for lowered springs, skunk 2's, tokico's. Whatever your fancy. Should cure your issue. Replace all four.

i also read around about my issue with my car shaking on acceleration. though its not a violent shake i definately feel a subtle yet significant amount of shaken amongst my entire car if im accelerating a little bit faster than granny speed (when you start torquing the motor) in maybe my 2 3 4 5 gears. i read that bad axles also attribute to that. i do not want to jump to any conclusions though

Re: Steering Wheel Shakes violently from 70+ mph -Searched-
I was in that similar situation. I replaced my upper control arm, inner tie rod ends, axle and still had that vibration on the steering wheel and some kind of a noise that was heard around the steering column area only while turning at low speeds and making a lot of 3 point turns or rocking the steering when at a complete stop. I was thinking it was the steering column itself and i drove my car to bear and frame which in a wheel alignment place and asked them to check the rack and pinion since that was the only thing i could think of. So one of the guys sat in the car and rocked the steering wheel from left to right and the other guy was holding the rack from underneath and said that the vibration is coming from the rack and concluded that it was the rack & pinion going bad. I found it hard to believe at first but when i did my own diagnosis by removing the whole steering column that is attached to the swivel joint on the rack. After removing the swivel joint that connects the steering column to the rack there is a slight movement on the shaft that is attached to the rack. So my only hope is to replace the rack on my 94 civic coupe and to do that i have to remove the whole subframe. BTW my car is equipped with a manual rack so the problem might be different for cars equipped with a power steering rack.

as far as the rack and pinion. my car used to be a automatic car but i converted to manual a while ago... how hard is it exactly to remove the rack and pinion? you made it sound as though i'd have to cut it out o.O
EDIT: I actually have a powersteering rack not a manual rack. sorry....

You don't have to remove the subframe. Its a pain the ***, but there are directions on this site.
Pretty straight forward if you know what exactly your removing, the only problem i had was pulling it out because you have to turn the rack completely left (i believe) and then slide it out.

Only other thing I can think of is engine torque mounts.
I know stock honda ones tear super easily and that can cause heavy shaking particularly at idle.

axle... worn CV joints will vibrate like hell if they get too dry (ex. ripped boot)
and slow the f down. you dont need to do 70mph.
j/k.

Re: Steering Wheel Shakes violently from 70+ mph -Searched-
i just convert my 96 from automatic to manual also, and also i had power steering and also convert it to manual also.
one question i threw myself into while convert it. did you mess with the play on numbers 5, 6, 3, 4, 15 AND there should be a screwing nut that locks all of them into the steering mount? and also, there should be an under plate to cover the middle of the rack and pinion (DO NOT ELIMINATE THAT). its a support for it!
because when i went to pick-a-part and took out from a donor car, not knowing i wasnt supposed to mess with it. i took it apart thought that is one way to take out the whole rack and pinion, and finds out that messes up the whole stabilizer. and when i put it on my car while converting it, drove it, at 30+++ mph, my steering shakes like crazyy. it goes like 50 degrees left and right, and im wondering like wtf?

if so, you will have to get your whole rack and pinion rebuild or get a new or donor one.
and plus, its dead damn hard finding a manual rack i had to go on ebay to get one for $200.

let me know as soon as possible, because i dont want you to kill or hurt no one out in the streets, so as yourself mangg...

A bad wheel bearing will act up under non stress conditions. Like when going 60mph and you let off of the gas slightly. When you accelerate and hit the brakes it will go away. A bad wheel bearing feels very similar to a loose wheel.

Re: Steering Wheel Shakes violently from 70+ mph -Searched-
sometimes it doesn't shake when im traveling aroung 75 mph. today i was driving on the freeway and i noticed that it might not be very shaky until the freeway curves in a certain direction. I'll start to feel the wheel shake as it is turning then when i straighten out the wheel it starts to shake and knock with a klang klang klang noise. This vibration happens regardless of wether i'm coasting, accelerating or decelerating from 70+ miles per hour. so if the wheel bearing situation only applys to non-stress conditions i don't believe that will apply... anyone correct this?

Hey, I have the EXCAT same problem as you 4 days ago. I jacked up the front of my car, took both wheels out, and start inspecting it. everything look fine accept for the inner steering rod on both sides. i could bacially pull on the steering rod in and out as far as 4"!!!!
went to the junkyards and got a pretty good lloking one and installed it and the car feels like a Lexus on the highway. no more shaking like crazy after 70+ mph.
try that and get back to us.

I had this exact same problem and it turned out to be a wheel out of round. It wasn't bent, but when I jacked the car up and spun it, it would wobble side to side. Moved the wheel to another corner of the car - same thing. Threw a steely on there, and it didn't do it. Replaced wheel, problem solved.
And that, my friends, is why Rotas are only $100 a wheel.
