Engine Changes
Engine changes are legal as long as the following requirements are met to ensure that the change does not increase pollution from the vehicle:
* The engine must be the same year or newer than the vehicle.
* The engine must be from the same type of vehicle (passenger car, light-duty truck, heavy-duty truck, etc.) based on gross vehicle weight.
* If the vehicle is a California certified vehicle then the engine must also be a California certified engine.
* All emissions control equipment must remain on the installed engine.
After an engine change, vehicles must first be inspected by a state referee station. The vehicle will be inspected to ensure that all the equipment required is in place, and vehicle will be emissions tested subject to the specifications of the installed engine.
You are putting a light-duty truck engine in a passenger vehicle. You'll fail for that.

they just shove that thing up the exhaust. Depending on your decibal range they could figure out if your running a cat or not...

ive been to smog/ref in CA plenty of times to tell u i got a dec. test done with 4-2-1 headers, testpipe, and 5Zigen axleback. guy basically just told me to turn around and comeback with stock exhaust system. so i went back with just my axleback and passed no prob. he said noway im gonna pass w/o atleast a cat and thats pushin it. so i suggest NO fatass can and get a cat. better to do it right the first time.

Re: (B16DelSlo)
They actually open you hood and check which engine you have in the car because they have to rev the car to the spec of the engine. I had a b16 and they reved my engine at 5700.
