Lots are older than 25 years so most laws don't apply to them.

I think its just that you can't put an older engine in a newer car. i.e. 1995 b18c1 in 2000 civic.

um no.
the reason you cant do it for our cars is because its illegal to change the emissions standards (obdI or II) and put an older engine in. it obviously dosent apply to a 1969 chevelle.

YOU CAN PUT ANY ENGINE YOU WANT IN IT AS LONG AS YOU TELL YOUR STATE DMV AND PASS THE REQUIRED SMOG TESTS.

No.
if you register it with the DMV and pass your local emissions laws its 100% legal.

I meant if the motor was bone stock and thrown into your car.

well it depends on how you hooked it up. if you hooked up the charcol canister and all other emission related things, yes. it will pass smog but still technically be illegal.

i went through emissions twice with my jdm b16 in my 94 coupe. never failed visual or the sniffer. i hooked everything emissions related up tho.

Are you going to be living downtown or something? I'm pretty sure that's the only time you have to do any type of emissions testing on your car.

Weird. I just moved here, but I know quite a few people with swaps that haven't had to do any emissions stuff. I was told is was only required for people that live in certain zip codes.

Regarding Cali: You do have to make and appt with the State Referee, to get the car inspected and smogged. Visually, they will inspect your set up to make sure you motor is the same year as your car, or newer, and that you have all of the correct smog equipment for the car/motor. Then you get the standard smog test, on the smog dyno, and you MUST pass by the numbers. If you pass both, then you receive your BAR sticker, certifying that your swap is street legal. When I did mine, the test was $30.00, and the sticker was $8.00.

JDM motors: Jspec motors can be certified, but they must have all of the correct U.S. smog equipment for your particular vehicles year/model. That means U.S. ECU, wiring harness, sensors, etc.

so what your saying is that a jdm engine can pass..just as long as umm...ecu,wiring,exhaust manifold, intake are usdm. engine is same year or newer....cat converter is hooked up. am i missing anything else?

That's pretty much it. If you have the USDM stuff installed, motor is equivalent to the US version - and is the same year as your car or new, the motor is clean running with a good cat, you should be ok.
